What's Going On?
- Princeton is 3-1 in 2016 after taking down two top-20 teams last weekend at Bedford Field. The Tigers dropped then No. 12 Albany, 3-2, last Friday and then No. 10 Delaware, 4-2, on Sunday.
- Already with a goal, sophomore Sophia Tornetta deflected junior Ryan McCarthy's pass in the back of the net to tie the game. Later in the contest, she assisted on the game-winning goal by junior Lexi Quirk with 3:23 to go.
- Again down 2-1, this time it was McCarthy, who posted the game-tying and game-winning goals to lead Princeton to a 4-2 victory over the Delaware. Tornetta added an insurance tally to cap the scoring.
- With her stellar performance over the weekend, Tornetta was selected as the Ivy League Co-Player, Suburban Transit GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete and Longstreth/NFCHA's Division I Offensive Player of the Week.
- Princeton is 2-0 during a stretch of four consecutive contests vs. nationally ranked teams.
- After the game vs. No. 11 Virginia on Sept. 16, the Tigers welcome No. 7 Maryland comes to Bedford on Sept. 20.
- Other top opponents include a trip to No. 4 Penn State on Oct. 2 and a home date with No. 2 Duke on Oct. 9.
- The Tigers went 11-7 last season and won its 11th Ivy League title in 12 seasons.
- Princeton defeated Maryland, 3-1, to advance to the program's 14th NCAA quarterfinals appearance before losing to the eventual national champion, Syracuse.
- Princeton had seven players make the All-Ivy League squads including Maddie Copeland '16 (Ivy Offensive Player of the Year), Tornetta (Rookie of the Year) and Holmes-Winn (Coach of the Year) picking up major awards.
- The team had five players named to the 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region squads.
- Copeland was selected to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America third team.
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."Â
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Senior Cat Caro, Tornetta and freshman Maddie Bacskai were on United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- Princeton is 5-6 all time vs. Virginia.
- The Tigers won the first ever matchup against Virginia, winning 2-0 in the 1993 season.
- On the road, the Tigers are 2-5 against the Cavaliers, last losing in Charlottesville in 2014.
- Princeton's signature victory over Virginia was a 5-2 decision on the road in the 2012 NCAA Quarterfinals. The Tigers would go on to win the National Championship that season.
- The 15th-ranked Princeton field hockey team gave No. 9 Virginia all it could handle before falling in overtime, 4-3.
- Down 3-2 in the waning moments of regulation, the Cavaliers' Caleigh Foust netted the equalizer with just 50 seconds on the clock.
- With time winding down in the first overtime period, UVA struck again, with Tara Vittese finding Greta Ell for the game winner at 84:51.
- The Cavaliers are 3-3 on the season, most recently defeating Liberty 2-1 on Monday.
- Virginia's three losses are all to nationally ranked opponents, Penn State, Delaware and Duke.
- Riley Tata leads the Cavaliers with four goals and eight points this season.
- Lucy Hyams, along with a goal, has four assists to lead the squad.
- Hyams was a 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I First Team All-American and All-ACC First Team selection.
- Tara Vittese has three goals this year and was the 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA National Player of the Year.
