Women's Soccer Tops Duquesne 2-1 in Final Pre-Ivy Game
September 18, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Tyler Lussi hit a penalty-kick goal and Natalie Larkin put the Princeton women's soccer team ahead in a 2-1 win at Duquesne in what was the Tigers' final game before the Ivy League season starts Saturday at Yale.
Lussi's 16th-minute PK goal came after a Samantha McDonough try hit a Duquesne arm in the 18-yard box, and Lussi put in the PK for her 51st career goal to pass Penn alum Katy Cross and make her the highest-scoring player in the Ivy since 1988. The only players in front of Lussi are Harvard's Kelly Landry (68, 1981-84), Harvard's Sue St. Louis (65, 1977-80), and Brown's Theresa Hirschauer (62, 1985-88).Â
The two points from Lussi's goal give her 117 for her career and draws the Tiger senior closer to Cross (125) with only Hirschauer (131), St. Louis (148) and Landry (160) ahead.
Duquesne tied it in the 29th minute when Katie O'Connor put a high arcing shot over Tiger keeper Natalie Grossi, but Larkin retook the lead for Princeton in the 55th minute when Alessia Azermadhi directed a ball toward Larkin amid a crowd in the box and Larkin's try went just inside the right post.
The win squares the all-time series with Duquesne at 1-1 after the Dukes came to Princeton last year and left with a 3-2 win.
Princeton's 7-1 start is the program's best since 2004. Saturday's game at Yale will start at 4 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network.
