Gregoire's Last-Seconds Goal, Lussi's OT Winner Lift Women's Soccer at Delaware
September 02, 2016 | Women's Soccer
For the first 89:95 of Friday night's trip to Delaware, it looked like the Princeton women's soccer team would fall a goal short of the Blue Hens for the second season in a row.Â
Then, Vanessa Gregoire struck. Taking a couple touches from beyond the 18-yard box, Gregoire arced a shot into the upper-left corner of the goal with five seconds left in regulation, setting up an overtime that would stretch into two before Tyler Lussi sent an arc of her own inside the right post to leave Newark with a 2-1 win for the Tigers' third victory in as many games to start the season.
The game was the first on the road for Princeton on the new season after home wins over Fordham and Villanova last weekend. In hindsight, last Sunday's 1-0 win over the Wildcats, in which Princeton was scoreless until the final 10 minutes of the game, was foreshadowing.
Delaware's Krista Trinidad took a pass forward in the 18 from Natalie Zelenky in the 85th minute and found herself one-on-one with Tiger rookie goalkeeper Natalie Grossi, burying a shot that stood as the game's first goal until Gregoire's goal five minutes later with mere grains in the hourglass of Princeton's early unbeaten run.
Lussi's goal, the 46th of her career to put her one back of Esmeralda Negron '05 for the program's record, came 12 minutes into overtime after Princeton had put the pressure on Delaware for nearly all of the extra frames. Finally, Mimi Asom took control of the ball after a Delaware goal kick and Gregoire flipped it back to Lussi, who found space for the winner to preserve Princeton's perfect start to the season.
It'll be only two days before the Tigers put their 3-0 start on the line again, this time at Howard for an 11 a.m. start Sunday in Washington, D.C.
