BOX SCORE
Co-captains Cara Mattaliano and Brittany Ptak talked in the preseason about how high their standards are this fall, especially following the dramatic 2015 Ivy championship season. Then they went out and proved it.
Mattaliano (18) and Ptak (17) combined for 35 of Princeton's 64 kills in a 3-1 victory over Campbell Friday night in the opening match of the San Francisco Invitational. The Tigers will be back in action Saturday, as they face San Francisco (12:30 pm PT) and Indiana (5:00 pm PT); both matches are available via live stream and live stats.
Mattaliano, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, recorded 18 kills and 16 digs, while Ptak had 17 kills and led Princeton with a .483 hitting percentage. Both fed off the consistent setting of sophomore Claire Nussbaum, who had 52 assists and 11 digs in the victory.
While those were some of the familiar faces in Princeton's historic run to the Ivy League title, there was a new name who made an impact in Friday's victory. Well, a somewhat new name — Devon Peterkin, younger sister of 2015 co-captain Kendall Peterkin, added 14 kills and 18 digs in the victory over Campbell. Peterkin didn't waste any time making an immediate impact; she had five kills on only seven swings in the opening set, and she added four digs in a 25-12 win.
Sophomore Nnenna Ibe added nine kills and three blocks while hitting .421, while freshman Maggie O'Connell added three kills. Junior Kelly Matthews had 15 digs for Princeton, while classmate Maddie Huber added seven.
