Volleyball Uses Sweep Of Host USF To Complete 2-1 Weekend In California
September 03, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Princeton had never made a regular season trip to California before this weekend, but the reigning Ivy League champion made the most of its first tournament inside the Golden State.
The Tigers, who won a 3-1 season opener over Campbell Friday night, split their final two matches to cap a winning weekend at the San Francisco Invitational. Princeton jumped all over the host 49ers in Saturday's opener, but it couldn't solve the Indiana offense in a 3-0 loss to its Big Ten opponent in the finale.
PRINCETON 3, SAN FRANCISCO 0
Freshman Maggie O'Connell posted a perfect 8-for-8 performance to lead Princeton to an efficient sweep of San Francisco. O'Connell's effort, as well as an errorless effort from Nnenna Ibe (5-0-10), helped the Tigers hit .407 in a 25-11, 25-22, 25-21 win over the 49ers. All-Ivy middle Brittany Ptak led the Tigers with 13 kills, and she hit . 478 in the victory.
Sophomore Claire Nussbaum paced the offense with 28 assists, several of which went to her outside-hitting duo of Cara Mattaliano and Devon Peterkin, both of whom had nine kills and five digs. Junior Maddie Huber had 11 digs to lead the defensive effort, while classmate Kelly Matthews added eight.
INDIANA 3, PRINCETON 0
The Hoosiers gave Princeton a taste of its own medicine in the nightcap, as they used a highly efficient offense to hand the Tigers their first loss of the year. Indiana hit .419 and made only eight errors to claim a 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 win.
Ibe capped a strong first weekend with 11 kills and a .625 hitting percentage, while fellow middle Ptak recorded 11 kills with a .412 hitting percentage. Mattaliano and Peterkin combined for 13 kills, while Nussbaum and freshman Jessica Harris combined for 30 assists. Defense was the greater issue in this one; Princeton managed only 21 digs and one block for the match.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Princeton will head to the nation's capital next weekend for three matches at the Georgetown Classic, beginning Friday at 1 pm against Towson. The Tigers will take on their second of three Big Ten opponents this season (Maryland), as well as host Georgetown, throughout the weekend.
