Reigning Ivy Co-Champions Meet Friday As Princeton Prepares For Home Opener
September 28, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
After a stretch of 10 road matches to open its 2016 season, the reigning Ivy League co-champion Princeton women's volleyball team will finally get to play in the comfort of its own Dillon Gym this weekend. The Tigers will get to start that stretch with the team that ended their historic 2015 season — and the Ivy's other reigning co-champion — the Harvard Crimson.
Not a boring way to get it started, right?
You can watch both matches this weekend on the Ivy League Digital Network.
High Five
Princeton enters the weekend on a five-match win streak, including Saturday's 3-2 victory over Penn at the Palestra. The Tigers have the longest active win streak in the Ivy League, and they joined Harvard, Yale and Columbia as teams that won their league opener last week.
We're Honored
Princeton has won and Ivy-best three of the league's eight individual honors handed out already this season. Senior middle Brittany Ptak, a two-time All-Ivy League honoree in her career, was named the Player of the Week after recording a career-high 21 kills last weekend at Penn. She hit .625 in the match and now leads the Ivy League with a .409 hitting percentage.
Freshmen Devon Peterkin (Week 1) and Maggie O'Connell (Week 3) have both been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week this season. O'Connell, the MVP of the Rutgers Tournament two weeks ago, was named to last weekend's Honor Roll after recording 18 kills and hitting .586 in the win over Penn.
Elite Eight
Princeton enters the weekend having won eight straight Ivy League regular season matches, dating back to last season. After an 0-3 start in league play, the Tigers won 10 of their final 11 Ivy matches, including each of the last seven, to clinch a share of the Ivy title with Harvard. The Crimson held a tiebreaker over Princeton to host a one-match playoff for the NCAA bid, and they held off the Tigers 20-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-23.
High Efficiency
Princeton leads the Ivy League in attack percentage this season (.259), a total that ranks 42nd nationally, and the Tigers have the league's three most efficient hitters in Ptak, O'Connell and sophomore middle Nnenna Ibe. In three matches against Harvard last season, Ibe hit .375 and averaged 1.0 blocks per set.
Welcome Matt
Senior Cara Mattaliano is the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, and she was Princeton's top offensive option in the three matches against Harvard last season. She averaged 4.4 kills and 3.1 digs per match, and she posted 22 kills and 13 digs in the playoff loss in Cambridge. She is 83 kills away from becoming the 13th player in program history to go over the 1,000-kill mark.
Setting The Table
Sophomore Claire Nussbaum, an All-Ivy setter last season, leads the Ivy League with 10.17 assists, and she has paced the Ivy League's most efficient offense. In the win over Penn, Nussbaum posted career highs in both assists (62) and digs (22).
Scouting Harvard (3-7, 1-0 Ivy)
The record is a bit deceiving for the reigning Ivy League champion, which has faced arguably the toughest early-season schedule for any league team. The Crimson is led by senior setter Corinne Bain, a two-time all-region honoree and the program's career leader in both double-doubles and triple-doubles. Freshman Grace Roberts Burbank is making an early impact on the Harvard offense with nearly 2.3 kills per set on the season.
Scouting Dartmouth (6-5, 0-1) Ivy)
The Big Green opened the season with six wins in its first seven matches, but they enter the weekend on a four-match losing streak. Dartmouth remains one of the league's top defenses; the Big Green own the best opponent hitting percentage (.141) in the Ivies, and they have two of the Ivy League's top three in blocks in Kaira Lujan and Abby Kott.
