Women's Cross Country Tabbed 23rd in Preseason Poll
September 04, 2016 | Women's Cross Country
The Princeton women's cross country team is ranked No. 23 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason poll. The Tigers are the top-ranked Ivy League squad in the national poll.
Princeton finished the 2015 season ranked 21st after the Tigers finished 21st at the NCAA Championships in Louisville, a feat completed despite running without one of its top two runners, Emily de La Bruyere. The Michel David-Weill Scholarship winner is now pursuing her Master's in International Security at Paris's Science Po. A second-team Academic All-America, de La Bruyere is a key loss for the Tigers this year. She was fourth at Heps and third at Regionals. Another loss is the Tigers' No. 3 runner from last year, Kathryn Fluehr who was sixth at Heps and 13th at Regionals and 81st at the NCAAs.
Lizzie Bird is back for her senior season. The individual Ivy League Heps champion will captain this year's squad. Though an injury curtailed the beginning on her outdoor season, Bird still managed to make the NCAA Regional in the steeplechase with her first race being Ivy Heps where she scored in the event. This summer she was fifth at the British Olympic Trials in the same event.
Another familiar face and red ponytail on the starting line will be Megan Curham. The 2014 Ivy League champion and two-time cross country All-America is back after taking a year off from University last season.
Brighie Leach had a tremendous freshman season and was a consistent top-five scorer for the Tigers and should be again this year. Junior Melinda Renuart and senior Ally Markovich were also steady scorers. The roster is also bolstered by the addition of six newcomers.
Princeton begins the season under new head coach Brad Hunt, next Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Fordham Fiasco in Van Cortlandt Park.
