Lussi, Grossi Earn Weekly Ivy Honors
September 05, 2016 | Women's Soccer
A senior coming off a record-breaking performance and a freshman who picked up her second shutout of the new season have been recognized by the Ivy League as the conference's Player and Rookie of the Week.
Senior Tyler Lussi led the team with three goals over a 2-0 weekend, scoring the game winner in overtime at Delaware and adding a first-half penalty kick and a second-half tally in a 4-0 win at Howard. Those three goals pushed her over the top in her chase for the program's career goals record of 47, held by Esmeralda Negron '05. Now with 48 goals and 109 points, Lussi will become the Ivy's most prolific goal scorer in 28 years with three more goals and she'll become the Princeton career points record-holder with four more points.
Rookie Natalie Grossi started between the posts since the season opener against Fordham and has played all 372-plus minutes, giving up just one goal in the 2-1 OT win at Delaware Friday and turning in her second shutout in the Howard win Sunday.Â
Lussi shares this week's award with fellow Marylander, Harvard's Margaret Purce. It's the second time in as many weeks that Princeton has taken home the Ivy League Player of the Week award after sophomore Mimi Asom won the season's first honor last week, and it extends Lussi's record for Ivy Player of the Week honors in a career, with eight. Lussi had four a season ago after two as a sophomore and one as a freshman.
Princeton's last Ivy Rookie of the Week honor came on Oct. 26, 2015, the last of six Ivy Rookie recognitions Asom won last season.
The Tigers are off to their best start since 2004 at 4-0, and a win in Friday's 7 p.m. visit from Temple at Roberts Stadium would put Princeton at 5-0 for the first time since 2002.Â
