Colvin Scores and Morton Impresses in Debut as Princeton Tops St. John's 1-0
October 10, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Junior Jeremy Colvin scored in the 85th minute on a feed from junior Bryan Prudil to lift the Princeton men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over St. John's on Tuesday night. Freshman Sam Morton made six saves in his first collegiate appearance, including a game-saving stop in the 89th minute.
Princeton's goal started with a free kick at midfield, as senior Benjamin Issroff played the ball into the box where Colvin headed it down to Prudil. Prudil had a give-and-go with Gaby Paniagua at the top of the 18-yard box and then chipped a ball over to the right side, and Colvin read the pass beautifully. Staying onside, he settled the ball with his left foot and buried it into the lower left corner with his right.
Princeton (3-6-2) started the game dominating time of possession and didn't allow St. John's (5-5-2) to get much space in its attacking third. The Red Storm got a lift when Harry Cooksley checked in the 28th minute and that helped them to a 6-4 advantage in shots after 45 minutes.
Morton, who made two saves in the first half, stopped four more shots in the second. He had two highlight reel saves, the first in the 66th minute when Cooksley tested him from long range and arced a ball towards the upper 90 that Morton punched away. Morton made his best stop in the 89th minute, again on Cooksley, to preserve the clean sheet in his first game.
Princeton returns to Ivy League action on Saturday, Oct. 14 hosting No. 22 Columbia at 4 p.m.
