No. 14 Princeton Downs Northeastern, 3-0
October 15, 2017 | Field Hockey
BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 14 Princeton Tigers earned a weekend sweep with a 3-0 victory over the Northeastern Huskies at Dedham Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Princeton wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Ryan McCarthy registered her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Clara Roth inserted a corner that Julianna Tornetta stopped for McCarthy and the senior captain whipped the shot into the back of the cage in the third minute.
Â
Elise Wong looked to add on for Princeton, but her deflection in the circle was just off the mark at the 18:51 mark. The Tigers had two more attempts denied within the next minute and a half.
Â
The Tigers kept peppering Northeastern, sending four more shots on the cage during a five-minute span, but couldn't get one through.
Â
Northeastern's Rachel Campbell came up with a defensive save with under a minute remaining to keep the score at 1-0. The home squad earned a corner as the clock expired, but both its attempts were blocked. The Tigers had a 9-3 shot advantage in the first 35 minutes.
Â
Sophia Tornetta came close to expanding the Tigers' advantage right as the second half got underway as she had one shot stopped and another hit the post. Finally, Wong corralled a rebound and touched it through for her first tally of the year.
Â
In the 49th minute, Roth dribbled along the baseline and sent a pass towards MaryKate Neff in front and Neff took care of the rest.
Â
After taking a 3-0 lead, Princeton held Northeastern to just two shots over the final 16 minutes of game action. During that span, the Tigers had nine shots. Princeton finished with a 23-5 shot lead in the contest.
Â
The Tigers (8-6 overall) continues on the road at No. 13 Harvard next Saturday (12 p.m.). Princeton and Harvard are both 4-0 in the Ivy League. The Crimson took home the Ivy title last season.
