No. 14 Princeton Shuts Down No. 15 Harvard, 3-0, Remains Only Unbeaten Ivy Team
October 21, 2017 | Field Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 14 Princeton Tigers shut down a high-powered Harvard offense in a 3-0 victory over the No. 15 Crimson at Berylson Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Harvard came into the game, first in the Ivy League in goals per game (4.08) and fifth in the country.
Â
No big deal for the Tigers' defense.
Â
This was the first time that Harvard was shutout this year.
Â
The shutdown began as Princeton goalie Grace Baylis snuffed a Crimson shot along the right baseline in the 10th minute.
Â
Ryan McCarthy looked to get the Tigers on the board in the 13th minute as she ripped a shot that was denied by Harvard's Libby Manela. Manela had to also knock away the rebound before a Tiger could get to it.
Â
With the clock ticking under nine minutes to go in the first half, Princeton got on the scoreboard off a corner. Clara Roth inserted to MaryKate Neff, who riffled an attempt on the cage. Maddie Bacskai managed to deflect it in, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Â
McCarthy was trying to tack on for Princeton, but Olivia Allin made a defensive save, stopping the ball from going over the end line right before the half.
Â
After Baylis came up with her second save of the first half, Harvard was awarded a corner right before the clock ran out. On the corner, Bacskai blocked the shot wide and kept the score at 1-0.
Â
The Crimson had a great scoring threat 13 minutes into the second half. Mimi Tarrant corralled a bouncing ball and flicked it at Baylis, but the sophomore goalie sent it away.
Â
The Tigers got insurance on another corner with 16 minutes remaining. After a corner shot, Emma Street secured the rebound and put in the back of the cage.
Â
Julianna Tornetta put the game away as she beat the goalie to a rebound and touched it in for Princeton's third goal.
Â
Baylis put the exclamation point on the impressive defensive performance with her fourth and final save with three minutes remaining. She earned her ninth career shutout in the win.
Â
Princeton has not allowed a goal over the last 206 minutes and 43 seconds of game action, earning consecutive shutouts during that span.
With the victory, Princeton improves to 9-6 overall and 5-0 in the Ivy League. Harvard drops to 10-4 this season and 4-1 in the conference. The Tigers sit atop the Ivy standings as the lone undefeated squad.
Â
Head coach Carla Tagliente's team wraps up the home portion of its schedule next Saturday (12 p.m.) against Cornell. It will be Senior Day as the Tigers will honor its fifth seniors, Danielle Duseau, Rachel Park, Lexi Quirk, Sarah Brennan and Ryan McCarthy.
