No. 14 Princeton Earns NCAA Bid, Share of Ivy Title With 5-1 Win Over Cornell On Senior Day
October 28, 2017 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 14 Princeton Tigers (10-6, 6-0 Ivy) used a hat trick from Ryan McCarthy in its 5-1 takedown of the Cornell Big Red (8-6, 2-4 Ivy) on Senior Day at Bedford Field.
Â
McCarthy saved her best performance for her final home game as she recorded her first career hat trick in the victory. She now has a team-leading 15 goals this season and jumped into the program's top-10 in career points (95), combined goals and assists (59) and goals (41).
Â
With the victory, Princeton clinched a share of the Ivy League championship, its 25th all-time, and the Ivy's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It will be the 22nd time that the Tigers have made the Big Dance.
Â
Prior to the game, the Tigers honored the Class of 2018. The group has won 41 games in four years and has an impressive 24-3 mark in the Ivy League with three conference titles. The last time that Princeton did not play in at least the NCAA Play-In game was when the Class of 2018 was in third grade (2004).
Â
It took Princeton just 65 seconds to get on the scoreboard as it scored on a well-executed penalty corner. Clara Roth inserted to Julianna Tornetta, who stopped it for McCarthy. The senior captain took care of the rest as she ripped a shot into the cage.
Â
Princeton posted the next four shot attempts before getting its second goal of the game in the 16th minute. Sophia Tornetta dribbled around a few defenders and riffled a backhanded shot behind Cornell goalie's Maddie Henry to make it, 2-0.
Â
With seven minutes before the intermission, McCarthy added her second tally on a corner that was very similar to the first. Roth and Tornetta picked up assists on the goal.
Â
Two minutes later, Princeton followed that with another corner and this time Sophia Tornetta deposited the chance into the cage. Carlotta von Gierke inserted while Julianna Tornetta nabbed her third assist of the contest.
Â
The Tigers continued their offensive firepower in the second half with five consecutive shots to open the frame, but Cornell would finally get one through in the 42nd minute. The Big Red's Taylor Gladd sent a pass into the circle that was deflected by Gabby DePetro. The deflection dribbled over to Katie Carlson with some open space and she sent the shot in.
Â
Cornell's goal ended a Princeton shutout streak of 248 minutes and six seconds of game action, dating back to the Brown game on Oct. 14.
Â
McCarthy concluded the scoring as she earned her hat trick on a penalty stroke in the 60th minute. It's her second penalty stroke tally of the year. Sophia Tornetta and McCarthy led the Tigers with seven shots each. Henry made 10 saves in the loss for Cornell.
Â
Princeton will look to clinch the outright Ivy League title next weekend on the road at Penn. Princeton has won 12 straight and 22 of the last 23 against the Quakers. The game will take place on Saturday (Nov. 4) and start at 12 p.m.
