Princeton N.J. - The No. 14 Princeton Tigers will host Columbia on Friday (6:30 p.m.) before a matchup vs. No. 1 UConn on Sunday afternoon (12 p.m.). Both games next week will be streamed on the Ivy League Network.
What's Going On?
- Princeton trailed against Yale on Friday before Ryan McCarthy scored twice in the final 2:56 to give the Tigers their second Ivy League victory of the season.
- McCarthy completed the contest with 13 shots while Princeton held a 26-4 advantage in that category. The Tigers also had 10 more penalty corners, holding Yale to just one. Nine different players took a shot in the game for the Tigers.
- The Tigers also dropped a 1-0 decision to then-No. 7 Syracuse on Sunday.
- Princeton had their first corner with seven minutes left in the game, but Julianna Tornetta's attempt was picked up. Princeton was awarded one more corner with 1:35 remaining, but Syracuse cleared it.
- Princeton is 19-1 all-time vs. Columbia. The Tigers' lone loss to Columbia was in New York during the 2014 season.
- The Tigers have never lost to the Lions at home in 10 meetings.
- Princeton registered its biggest goal total in over a year with a 6-0 victory over the Columbia Lions at the Baker Athletics Complex.
- Four different Tigers scored in the contest highlighted by Cat Caro's '16 two tallies.
- After losing three straight to begin the year, the Lions have won five of their last six, improving their record to 5-4.
- The Lions are 2-0 in the Ivy League with victories over Brown and Cornell.
- Maeve Doherty leads the team with eight goals and 22 points this season.
- Katie Dempsey was selected as the Ivy League Player of the Week after a 14-save effort vs. Cornell.
- The Huskies lead the Tigers, 15-8.
- Connecticut has won the last three meetings. Princeton last won against the Huskies in 2012.
- These two teams have met three times in the NCAA Tournament with UConn winning twice.
- Over the last 10 years, the Tigers have snagged three of four against Connecticut in Princeton.
- Maddie Copeland gave No. 20 Princeton an early lead, but the Tigers could not hold on against No. 2 Connecticut, ultimately falling to the Huskies at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex, 4-1.
- Trailing 1-0 at the intermission, UConn netted four unanswered goals in the second half to remain unbeaten at 17-0.
- As the last undefeated team in the country, the Huskies were selected No. 1 in the NFHCA Coaches' Poll for a fourth straight week.
- UConn has dropped three common opponents that Princeton has faced or will face later in the year in Harvard, Boston University and Delaware.
- The No. 1 ranked squad has outscored opponents, 49-6, this season.
- Four Huskies have at least 22 points in 2017.
- The Tigers battle nine 2016 NCAA Tournament teams along with the other three squads from the Final Four on its 2017 schedule.
- The Tigers have 10 nationally ranked teams on their schedule.
- Seven of the team's first eight games come against ranked opponents. The first weekend for Princeton without a top-25 opponent comes Oct. 14-15 when it travels to Brown and Northeastern.
- The Tigers went 12-8 in 2016 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight season, receiving the program's first at-large bid to the tournament.
- One of the greatest moments in program history, Sophia Tornetta laced a laced a shot into the back of the cage as time expired to send the Tigers to the Final Four for the first time since 2012 with a 3-2 victory over No. 7 Virginia.
- No. 8 Delaware ended Princeton's season in the national semifinals as Esmee Peet scored the game-winner with 1:30 remaining, giving the Blue Hens a 3-2 decision. Delaware would go on to win the national championship.
- The Tigers had five players selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams. Caro and Ryan McCarthy were picked for the all-region first team while Maddie Bacskai, Tornetta and Elise Wong were honored with second team accolades.
- Caro topped off her fabulous senior season with a Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division I All-America First Team accolade. She had a personal-high 18 goals and 47 points. She registered a point in 15 of the team's 19 games and finished the season eighth in the country in goals (.95) and 13th in points per game (2.26).
- In January, Katie '13 and Julia '14 Reinprecht retired from the United States National Field Hockey team.
- The two sisters retire as two-time Olympians, helping the U.S. to fifth place in the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since the 1996 summer games in Atlanta. They also won two gold medals at the Pan American Games (2011, 2015). Wrapping up their careers, Katie finished with 166 caps while Julia had 154 caps.
- Kathleen Sharkey '13 helped the national squad to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup in mid-August. She scored five times, leading the tournament in scoring.
- Princeton continues to be well-represented with USA Field Hockey as four Tigers were named to the U.S. U-21 National Team and two more to the National Development Squad.
- Maddie Bacskai, Julianna Tornetta, Sophia Tornetta and Elise Wong were picked to the U-21 squad while Cat Caro '17 and Ryan McCarthy were selected to the development team. Princeton's four representatives on the U-21 team are the most in the country.
