Tigers Sweep Harvard, Grab Sole Control Of First Place In Ivy
October 07, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Princeton grabbed sole control of first place in the Ivy League in emphatic fashion Saturday evening in Dillon Gym. The Tigers swept previously unbeaten Harvard, including a dominant opening two sets, to become the only team in league play with a perfect 5-0 record.
Reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Maggie O'Connell had a dominant night, killing 17 balls on only 27 swings (.519), and adding a pair of blocks and a dig in a 25-12, 25-13, 25-21 over the Crimson. Classmate Natasha Skov, the Ivy League leader in kills entering the weekend, added eight kills in the win, Princeton's 16th straight Ivy League home victory.
The Tigers had another impressive night from its middle duo of Caroline Sklaver and Nnenna Ibe. Sklaver had seven kills and hit .417, while Ibe — coming off a career performance against Dartmouth — added six kills and five blocks over the Crimson. Sophomore setter Jessie Harris had 34 assists, five kills and five digs for the Tigers, who will head to New York next weekend to complete the first half of their Ivy League season at both Cornell (Friday, 7) and Columbia (Saturday, 5); both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
Princeton, the two-time reigning Ivy League champion, was in full control through the first two sets, but the Tigers had to buckle down in a tight third set. Tied at 16-16, Princeton got a kill from Skov and a service ace from Sklaver to build a slight edge, and then consecutive kills by Skov later opened a 21-17 lead. The Crimson would get back within two at 23-21, but O'Connell powered down back-to-back kills to close the match.
