BYU Holds Off Late Tiger Run, 65-56
November 15, 2017 | Men's Basketball
A spirited second half saw the Princeton men's basketball team push to emerge from a nine-point hole against BYU with just less than six minutes to play, but the Cougars stayed perfect in the all-time series with a 65-56 win Wednesday night in Jadwin Gym.
The visit was just BYU's second to Jadwin, along with a trip in 1981. The Cougars now lead the series 6-0.
Princeton led by three as late as 34-31 less than two minutes into the second half, but BYU went on a 5-0 run to take a lead it relinquished only twice, with ties at 39-39 and 41-41.
BYU went on a pivotal 8-0 run to take a 52-43 lead with 6:39 to play, but Princeton soon answered with a 7-2 run to pull within two at 56-54 with three minutes left. That's where the run stalled, though, as BYU's TJ Haws drew a three-shot foul and sank all three with 2:33 left to spark a 9-0 run that sealed it for the Cougars.
Devin Cannady led Princeton with 19 points with junior classmate Myles Stephens also in double figures with 10. Elijah Bryant posted a game-high 22 for BYU.
Princeton outrebounded the Cougars 36-22, the Tigers' largest rebounding advantage since outboarding Cal Poly by 21 last Dec. 31. Princeton also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds a game after going without one at Butler, the Tigers most offensive rebounds since getting 14 in that same game against Cal Poly in Jadwin.
The Tigers see-sawed proficiency on offense and defense from Sunday's game at Butler, going from shooting 55.6 percent from the field at Hinkle to 37.3 percent in the home opener, but allowing 54.4 percent to the Bulldogs and 43.6 percent to BYU. Princeton also allowed just one offensive rebound to BYU. The Cougars, though, compounded their edge from the field with getting to the line often and taking advantage, going 25 of 27 to 9 of 12 for Princeton.
Princeton will play again Saturday at 7 p.m. at Saint Joseph's.
