Late Run Lifts Saint Joseph's Over Men's Basketball Team, 71-58
November 18, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Devin Cannady notched his seventh career 20-point game, but Saint Joseph's handed the Princeton men's basketball team a 71-58 defeat Saturday night in Philadelphia.
Princeton led by as many as six in the first half and was within three points at 53-50 with just more than eight minutes to go, but that preceded a 6-0 Hawks run that saw Princeton stay off the board for 3:31. It was part of a larger 17-5 run that sealed the game for Saint Joseph's, putting the Hawks up 15 at 70-55 inside of two minutes to go.
Cannady, Amir Bell with 15 points and Myles Stephens with 13 combined for 50 of the Tigers' 58 points, and that trio has reached double figures in a combined eight of nine opportunities on the young season.Â
"We didn't turn them over," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 Princeton men's basketball coach said. "I thought they played like a team that, they needed to win at home. I think we're going to have balance eventually. but we've got to get into a rhythm. Aaron Young makes shots every single day. So does Mike LeBlanc. Those are good looks for us, but can we get more offensive rebounds? Can we generate some more, easier hoops for our guys so it's not so hard. We're searching a little bit, but I think we're going to be alright."
Though Saint Joseph's outshot Princeton only 47.2 percent to 41.2 percent for the game, the Hawks were able to better their shooting clip from 41.4 percent before the break to 54.2 percent in the decisive second half. The Hawks added to that with a 30-25 rebounding edge while Taylor Funk played 24 minutes off the bench to post a game-high 23 points as one of four Saint Joseph's players in double figures.
