Cross country can be unpredictable. This year's NCAA Championships was no exception. Less than 24 hours ago it was announced the women's race would be moved up to 9 a.m., from its originally slated 10:45 a.m., start time due to a weather front moving into the area. As of 7 a.m., there was a wind advisory in place making the 60 degree temperature feel much cooler.
It did nothing to dampen junior Gabi Forrest's run in her first NCAA Championships.
At the 2k split she was in 85th place with a 6:37.4 as the runners started out quickly. Forrest moved up 44 places into 41st at the 4k mark as she continued let her strong start continues as others faded with a split time of 6:49.3). She was in a large second pack and stayed there through the next 1k in which she ran 3:28.8 and had a time of 16:55.3. Over the final 1k she hit the throttle and moved into 37th with an overall time of 20:09.81.
"It went out really fast but all I tried to do was find my rhythm and position myself in a good spot," Forrest said. "I really wanted to cap off the season on a high. My dream goal was the finish in the top 40. Even though the race wasn't in the best conditions it didn't change any of my goals."
The 37th place finish gives Forrest her first career All-America honors, impressive as it was her first NCAA Championship in any of the three sports (cross country, indoor track, outdoor track).
As her championship season heated up, so did Gabi. After clocking a 21:02.3 to win the Ivy League individual Heps title, she ran 20:12.2 at Regionals to take fourth overall and then displayed her best 6k time of the season this afternoon.
"We're so pleased for Gabi to have such a great ending to a fantastic fall," head coach Brad Hunt said. "Ultimately as a program it is a tremendous step forward as a group and Gabi is paving the way to show us how far we have come and where we are at. Through her experiences at Princeton she has discovered herself and what she is capable of and it lets her shine."
Forrest is the ninth Tiger in program history to capture All-America honors.
