Men's Swimming & Diving Opens 2017-18 Season Friday vs Nova Southeastern
November 02, 2017 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton men's swimming & diving team will make its return to the pool Friday afternoon, and it will bring a new spirit and energy into its 4 pm dual meet with Nova Southeastern, which will take place at the University of Miami.
The Tigers have placed their focus on the present and future, and the coaching staff has been excited by the early progression of several swimmers and divers throughout the classes. While they have been pleased with the work done over the last year, they also recognize the leadership of the Class of 2018, which has helped bring forth a new culture for the program. Tri-captains Zach Buerger, Drew Jung, and Ben Schafer have led the charge, though classmates like Tyler Sullivan have also played an instrumental role.
Two members of the senior class who bring impressive credentials into the 2017-18 season are Corey Okubo, a two-year NCAA qualifier, and Alex Lewis, a member of the 2016 All-America 200 free relay. That duo will be looked upon for top performances throughout the season, especially in what is expected to be a highly competitive Ivy League field.
Junior Cole Buese made a name for himself at the 2016 Ivy League Championships, when a strong Saturday performance helped the Tigers rally for the league title, though classmate Tyler Lin has had an especially impressive preseason and looks to be thriving as he enters his junior year fully healthy.
Among the sophomores, Derek Cox and Tigar Cyr could have strong performances early this season. Cox brings a versatility that will allow the coaching staff to use him in multiple ways, while Cyr hit a lifetime best in the 100 free and could be an impact swimmer in both individual and relay events.
The freshmen have worked hard to integrate themselves into the team and prepare for the challenges of their first collegiate season. Swimmer Josh Brown and diver Colten Young are two names to keep an eye on early, though several freshmen could provide early breakthrough performances once they get some experience under their belts.
Princeton will face several solid tests in the first half of the season, including a two-day meet at the Virginia Invitational Nov. 10-11. The Ivy League season opens Friday afternoon with a 3 pm meet tri-meet with Cornell and Penn, and the Big Al Invitational is set for Dec. 1-3 at DeNunzio Pool.
That meet will be an ideal setup for down the road, when DeNunzio serves as the host for the 2018 Ivy League Championships (Feb. 21-24).
