Sophomore keeper Natalie Grossi made a career-high 10 saves in No. 13 Princeton's 3-1 NCAA quarterfinal defeat at No. 4 UCLA Saturday night, earning her honors as the Suburban Transit/GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week.
Grossi, who earned honorable mention All-Ivy League honors while recording a Princeton season-record 11 shutouts this year, almost doubled her previous career-high save total, which was six entering Saturday's game. Grossi had made the half-dozen stops four times in her two seasons as the Tiger starting keeper, most recently in Princeton's 2-1 overtime win over No. 2 North Carolina that sent the Tigers on to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal run was the second time Princeton has been at least that far in the era of the 64-team NCAA tournament, which expanded to that number in 2001. The 2004 Tigers made the NCAA semifinals, a run that also ended against UCLA.
Grossi will enter the 2018 campaign - and the second half of her Tiger career - with 15 shutouts, eight back of the career record of 23 set by Kelly O'Dell '84. This season, Grossi, by one, broke O'Dell's single-season record of 10 set in 1981, also O'Dell's sophomore year. Grossi's 0.57 GAA was sixth-best among Tiger starters in program history, not far off the record of 0.48 held by Dodie Colavecchio '88 in 1985. The number was the best since Alyssa Pont '11 posted an 0.50 GAA in 2008.Â
