Givens, Gregoire Earn United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-Region Recognition

For the first time in 13 years, the Princeton women's soccer team made the NCAA quarterfinals, and for the first time in 13 years, the Tigers have two players recognized as United Soccer Coaches first-team all-region.
Though it has changed from NSCAAÂ to United Soccer Coaches and Mid-Atlantic to East region, it's the first time since 2004, when Esmeralda Negron '05 and Diana Matheson '08 earned first-team all-region, that two Tigers have earned first-team honors. This time, it's senior midfielder Vanessa Gregoire and sophomore forward Abby Givens.Â
It's the first United Soccer Coaches honor for either Tiger. Last year, Tyler Lussi '17 was named first-team all-region for the second consecutive year, and it's the fourth year in a row that Princeton has had at least one first-team all-region honoree.
The complete United Soccer Coaches All-East Region teams can be found here.
Gregoire, who earlier Tuesday was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, earned her fourth consecutive All-Ivy League honor and second first-team All-Ivy recognition while being named Princeton's third Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year in the last four seasons. She finished with three goals and an Ivy-best eight assists this season, getting her program record-breaking 27th and final assist in Princeton's NCAA second-round tie with No. 21 North Carolina State, where the Tigers advanced in a penalty-kick shootout.Â
Givens, also a first-team All-Ivy League honoree, scored her Ivy-best 12th goal in Princeton's NCAA quarterfinal game at No. 4 UCLA last Saturday while also leading the Ivy with 30 points. She quadrupled her freshman-year goal total (three) in her sophomore campaign and more than tripled her freshman-year point total (nine). Givens had three NCAA tournament goals, including one that ranks as big as any in program history when she had the overtime winner at No. 2 North Carolina to advance the Tigers into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.
