No. 10/13 Miami Tops Princeton at HoopHall Miami Invitational
December 02, 2017 | Men's Basketball
The HoopHall Miami Invitational Saturday night at AmericanAirlines Arena, the home of the Miami Heat, started off well for the Princeton men's basketball team, but the hometown Hurricanes showed why they're ranked 10th in the nation by the writers and 13th by the coaches in an 80-52 win over the Tigers.
"It's hard to see it from (an outside) perspective, but from my perspective, there's growth," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 Princeton head coach said. "I want to challenge the guys with the schedule. We've got to keep fighting. The record doesn't show it, but I think we're improving."
Princeton began 3 of 4 and 6 of 12 from the field on the way to a 16-14 lead, but the Tigers went cold for the rest of the half, hitting just 2 of 18 tries as Miami closed the half on a 24-6 run to lead by 18 at the break, 38-20.
Miami's lead never got smaller than 15 points after the break as the Hurricanes closed out the win. For the night, Miami outshot Princeton 50 percent to 31.1 percent overall and was hot from 3, going 14 of 25 (.560) to 8 of 32 (.250) for the Tigers. Miami also won the glass 39-31, and though Princeton turned Miami over 12 times to 11 giveaways for the Tigers, Princeton's turnovers were more costly, as Miami led Princeton in points off turnovers, 15-9.
Princeton will hit the road again Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start at George Washington.
"What we have coming up is this stretch where we play GW on Wednesday and then we're home against Monmouth (on Dec. 12) and we have a week (in between those games)," Henderson said. "We need that week, for us. Right now, it's just game-to-game. Once we get to California and Hawaii, I hope we get a chance to play these teams again [Miami is also in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic] because, hopefully, it'll show that we have some growth."
