Men's Tennis Picks Up Season's First Win, Defeats Rice 4-3
February 10, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Singles wins from Tom Colautti and Alex Day broke a tie and swung the match to Princeton Friday evening in Jadwin Gym as the Tiger men's tenn's team defeated Rice, 4-3, for the team's first win of the dual-match season
Princeton (1-2) saw the nation's 20th-ranked doubles team, Day and Gamble, beat the nation's ninth-ranked team, Tommy Bennett and David Warren of Rice, 6-1, before Kial Kaiser and Diego Vives finished off the first point of the night for Princeton with a 6-2 win at third.
Rice (4-4) won on courts four and five in singles around a Kaiser win on six to square the match at 2-2, but Day rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the first-set tiebreak to win that 8-6 and take the first frame on the way to a straight-set win, and Colautti quickly followed by closing out a three-set win at second for the clincher.
"We expected a close, hard-fought match as Rice is a very good team," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "Last year in Houston, it was the same type of match, though a 4-3 loss for us. However, the big difference today was how we started in doubles, with a sense of purpose and confidence. That set a good tone, but Rice battled back and it was really a match of momentum from there. We had some experienced guys in the end closing it out with some clutch play. We can't enjoy this long as we have two more good teams visiting Jadwin on Sunday for a doubleheader."
Princeton will have Wisconsin and VCU in a Sunday doubleheader at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Jadwin Gym. Admission to the matches is free.
Order of finish: Doubles: 1, 3; Singles: 4, 6, 5, 1, 3, 2
