Men's Tennis Team Splits Twinbill With Wisconsin, VCU
February 12, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The first match of the day Sunday for the Princeton men's tennis team couldn't have been any closer, and after that, the Tigers had to turn right around and face another opponent.
After dropping a 4-3 decision to Wisconsin (4-1), Princeton (2-3) took the doubleheader split with a 6-1 win over VCU (6-3), taking two of three matches on the weekend along with the Friday win over Rice.
Wisconsin won the doubles point by outlasting Princeton in a match at third that went to a marathon tiebreaker, which the Badgers took 15-13. Princeton then took three of the first five singles matches to finish, with Luke Gamble, Kial Kaiser and Payton Holden helping the Tigers pull the match even at 3-3. But, Wisconsin took the morning's decisive match at third, as the Badgers' Chema Carranza won the second set in a 9-7 tiebreak and took the third set 7-5.
"Wisconsin played an inspired match and took advantage of their opportunities at crucial points to get the win," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "Hats off to them; they play hard and they are well coached. I was pleased with the way we rebounded in the afternoon after the tough loss to Wisconsin. Clearly this was a difficult doubleheader against two good teams and it was ambitious scheduling on my end."
Against VCU, Princeton won the first two doubles matches to finish, giving up only three games in those two wins. Alex Day, Gamble and Holden then won the first three singles matches to finish, clinching the match. Kaiser and Jonathan Carcione added wins to make the 6-1 final.
"With the morning match, we had numerous chances to to be successful and we had some unique things happen in the match that were challenging," Pate said. "We didn't have the composure and resiliency in the early stages. I think we had seven match points in the doubles as it was a crazy tiebreaker. That was somewhat unlucky, but we had plenty of opportunities to overcome that. Certainly a disappointing result, though I am very encouraged from what we saw in the VCU match. We have a great schedule and we're going to keep seeing these type of opportunities. As we demonstrate improvement from one match to the next, as we did today, we can be a very good team. We'll get back to work and prepare for the ECAC at home starting Friday."
Princeton will host the ECAC Championship, which runs through Sunday. Details on the event will be announced early this week.
Order of finish: Doubles: 2, 1, 3; Singles: 5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 3
