Cornell Defeats Men's Tennis Team in ECAC Semis
February 18, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Updated Bracket | Watch on the Ivy League Digital Network
Though the Princeton men's tennis team started the day with a doubles-point win, Cornell won the first four singles matches to finish to take Saturday's ECAC Championship semifinal 4-1 in Jadwin Gym.
Princeton will face Dartmouth Sunday at 10 a.m. for third place while Cornell will battle Columbia for the title following Princeton's match.
"Credit to Cornell for coming back strong after we won a close doubles point," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "They took advantage of every opportunity we gave them. We had positive momentum early in singles, but midway through the first sets, we missed on points to seize control. Our effort was good, though we simply didn't execute enough when it was critical to do so. We'll get right back at it tomorrow against Dartmouth, which will pose another tough challenge."
Wins from Alex Day and Luke Gamble at first doubles and Tom Colautti and Payton Holden at second put Princeton up 1-0, but Cornell took straight-set matches on courts one, three, five and six to clinch and end the match.
Order of finish: Doubles: 2, 3, 1; Singles: 1, 3, 5, 6
