February 22, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – As the Princeton Tigers prepare for the national stage, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll has head coach Luis Nicolao's squad at No. 10 this week.
The Tigers are in the Varsity Poll's top 10 for the second straight week. They will take on the No. 19 Harvard Crimson in a non-league game on ESPNU this Saturday at DeNunzio Pool at 10:30 a.m.
The women's water polo team has won 39-of-40 meetings all-time against the Crimson including this current streak of 24 consecutive victories. The Crimson come into Saturday's matchup on a four-game winning streak, its only blemish a season-opening loss to Wagner.
Princeton is off to its best start since 2014, winning its first six contests including a 14-7 win over then-No. 21 Wagner on Feb. 5. The Tigers used strong defense at the Bison Invitational (Feb. 11-12), allowing just 11 goals as they took down Claremont Mudd Scripps, St. Francis-Brooklyn and George Washington. The week prior at the Bruno Classic, Princeton ripped off three wins, each victory by at least seven goals. The Tigers have scored at least 12 goals in every game this year.
Chelsea Johnson has been the team's leading scorer as she has posted 15 goals and 22 points this season. All but one shot that she has taken as gone into the back of the net. Three other players have contributed 10+ goals in Morgan Hallock, Haley Wan and Amy Castellano. Ashleigh Johnson has been outstanding in her return to Princeton as she has a .759 save percentage in five games started.
CWPA Varsity Poll's top teams remain the same for another week as Stanford holds the No. 1 spot with USC, UCLA, Calif., and Arizona State rounding out the top five. Princeton will take on USC and Arizona State later this season. Michigan is still the top CWPA squad at No. 8.
