PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's track & field team, under the tutelage of first-year head coach Michelle Eisenreich, travel to familiar territory for the 2017 Ivy League Heptagonal Championships this weekend. The meet, held at The Armory in New York, begins on Saturday, Feb. 25 and concludes Sunday, Feb. 26.
Both days will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
The Tigers look to improve upon last year's fourth-place finish to bring home its 10th title.
SPRINTS & HURDLES
Last year's Most Valuable Performer, Allison Harris returns for her senior season. She is most likely going to double in both the hurdles and pole vault. She was a scorer in the hurdles last year and has the 10th best time in the league at 8.77. Junior Maia Craver and sophomore Ellie Randolph have raced even faster times at 8.73 and 8.75 this season. Randolph was a scorer in the high hurdles during Outdoor Ivy Heps.
In the short sprints, sophomore Christina Walter has the top time for the Tigers at 7.72 in the 60.
It's Craver that has the best time in the 200, sitting 10th in the league with a 24.83 run the Metro Season Opener. She also has the eighth-best time in the 400, one position in front of freshman Heide Baron.
Another option in the 200 is senior Elisa Steele. Steele boasts the team's top two times in both the 400 and 500 as well. In the 200 she ran a 24.85 at the Villanova Invite, while also clocking a PR in the 400 at 55.45 that same meet to sit fourth in the league. In the 500, she is also fourth with a PR time of 1:14.11 from HYP. Steele was a scorer in the 400 last year and could make up the missing points left on the table after Cecilia Barowski '16 ran a meet record in the 500 last year.
MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE
The Tigers distance crew has been a force this indoor season and look to grab some crucial points towards the team scoring. Senior Katie Hanss has the second-fastest time in the league in the 1000m with a 2:46.20 from HYP. In 2015, Katie finished sixth at Indoors in the mile and has the eighth-best time in the league this year, running a lifetime best of 4:44.40 on Feb. 10. Senior Lizzie Bird ranks seventh in the league with a team-best mark of 4:44.38 in the mile and she has the best time by a Tiger in the 3000m with a time of 9:34.89. Alexandra Markovich finished eighth at the 2016 Ivy League Cross Country Championships, indicating she has scoring potential at 3000 and 5000, as she posted a lifetime best at 3000 this season.
Sophomore Alie Fordyce and senior Zoe Sims also have 1000m times that rank in the top 10 in the league at 2:49.08 and 2:49.18 and top five in school history.
Junior Ashley Forte was runner-up at last year's Heps in the 800. She will be a strong contributor in both open events and relays this weekend. Sophomore Anna Jurew looks to build upon her fifth-place finish from last year's 800 final.
JUMPS
Harris is expected to bring home her second consecutive Ivy League indoor title in the pole vault. She has scored in every indoor and outdoor pole vault at Heps – six times with two wins and two second-place finishes. Last weekend Harris set the Ivy League and Princeton record in the event after clearing 4.27 (14-0) at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
In the high jump, sophomore Nnenna Ibe has the best mark for the Tigers at 1.70 (5-7) to tie for fourth-best in the league. She was fourth in the high jump at the 2016 Outdoors. Freshman Hadley Wilhoite has scoring
potential as well.
Sophomore Kerri Davidson, who finished third in the triple jump last year, looks to grab points in that event. Her jump of 11.90 (39-0.5) puts her fifth in the league. Ibe has also had a big jump of 11.54 (37-10.5) in trying the triple for the first time this year.
THROWS
Princeton has a great throwing combination in senior Julia Ratcliffe and junior Kennedy O'Dell. Ratcliffe, the 2014 NCAA champion in the hammer throw, has the best mark in the weight in the league. She is the only Ivy Leaguer to toss over 20 meters and did so just last weekend. Her throw of 20.13 (66-0.5) ranks as the best throw in Princeton history and the second-best throw in Ivy League history. Ratcliffe's history at Indoor Heps include a win in the weight in 2015 and runner-up in both 2014 and 2013.
O'Dell's season-best in the weight of 18.38 (60-3.75) is the third best in the league. She scored in both the weight and the shot put last year – not to mention scoring in three throws during Outdoor Heps. O'Dell has thrown 13.98 (45-10.5) in the shot this season to rank fifth in the league.
MULTIS
Though Princeton lost last year's pentathlon champion Taylor Morgan'16 to graduation as well as fellow Ivy scorer Kerry Krause '16, the Tigers have young multieventers ready to take those points in the pentathlon, with the Orange & Black owning three of the top 10 scores in the league. Sophomore Frances Lodge has the third-best score in in the league with 3,554 points, while sophomore Mikaela Sawyer recorded 3,071 points for the seventh-best score. Craver can do damage in the pentathlon as well.
RELAYS
Princeton's 4x800 posted the league's second-fastest mark in the event this season with a time of 9:05.46 at HYP, just behind Yale. The 4x400 has the third-fastest time after a 3:46.13 at Fastrack, while the Distance Medley Relay will make the season debut on championship Sunday.
