Cook Earns Men's Hoops Team's First Academic All-America Honor Since 1998
March 02, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Bill Bradley, Barnes Hauptfuhrer, Frank Sowinski, Bob Roma, Gordon Enderle, Kit Mueller, Steve Goodrich. And now, Steven Cook.
You'll find most of those names on the Princeton men's basketball team's list of 1,000-point scorers, and as of Cook's addition today, they are also all CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees.
Cook, a senior economics major, was named to the third team CoSIDA Academic All-America, becoming the program's first honoree since 1998 after he was the first Princeton men's basketball player since 2007 to be named CoSIDA Academic All-District. He is one of 15 players honored across Division I on the three CoSIDA Academic All-America teams as voted on by the nation's collegiate sports information directors.
"Steve gives his very best every day," Mitch Henderson '98, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton men's basketball, said. "He pulls everyone around him up a level. I was fortunate enough to be here and play with our last Academic All-America, Steve Goodrich. I'm glad that I've been able to be associated with Princeton basketball's last two Academic All-Americans. Steve is very deserving and I am proud of him."
Cook has also been named to the Allstate NABC Good Works Team, affording him the chance to travel to the Final Four in Arizona next month to be recognized for his on-court and off-the-court contributions and to participate in a community service project with other Good Works Team members.
On the court, Cook stands as Princeton's second-leading scorer at 13.2 points per game, and he has the chance to earn his third All-Ivy League honor this season.Â
Cook and the Tigers, who have already clinched at least a share of the program's 27th Ivy League championship, will host Harvard Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPNU and Dartmouth Saturday at 6 p.m. on the Ivy League Digital Network and ESPN3Â as they pursue a perfect 14-0 Ivy League season.
