Princeton Drops Iona, Villanova; Nicolao Scores 800th Career Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Princeton Tigers scored two victories at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday to help head coach Luis Nicolao score his 800th combined victory. The Tigers took down Iona (14-5) in the morning and then dropped Villanova (13-3).
Nicolao, who started in 1998, has 420 wins with the women's team and 380 with the men. He has a winning percentage of .726 and has been to the NCAA Tournament seven times during his tenure at Princeton."I'm lucky to have coached some great players during my time here," said Nicolao. "All it means is that I've been coaching a long time, but I'm grateful to reach that big milestone."
Princeton 14, Iona 5
It's the fourth straight season that Princeton has opened up with a victory and 13th straight takedown of Iona. Chelsea Johnson led Princeton with four goals while Eliza Britt also added a hat trick. Freshman Amy Castellano (two) and Natalie Grayson (one) each scored in their collegiate debuts. The Tigers swiped 12 passes and drew eight ejections. Senior Ashleigh Johnson made eight saves in the victory.
The Tigers raced out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Ashleigh Johnson got into the act early as she made three saves, stole a pass and assisted on a Tigers' goal in the first eight minutes of game play. Johnson pitched a shutout in the second frame as Princeton led 6-1 at the intermission. Four tallies in the third stanza put the game away as the Tigers finished with a nine-goal win.

Johnson also posted three assists and three steals. Britt added three helpers while Nicolao's unit stole 13 passes in the win.
Princeton jumped out in front early with a 5-0 lead after the first frame. The No. 11 nationally ranked team led 9-2 at the break, giving Ashleigh Johnson the rest of the night off. She finished with four saves and two steals. Freshman Kasey Bersh stopped three shots over the final two stanzas as the Tigers improved to 2-0.
