No. 11 Princeton Ready For 2017 Season To Begin At Brown; Sit No. 11 in CWPA Poll

PRINCETON, N.J. – With Olympic gold medalist Ashleigh Johnson back in the fold, the Princeton Tigers are poised to make a run to the NCAA Tournament this season.
Last season, the Tigers went 19-7 and reached the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Semifinals for the fifth straight season. Princeton had seven players with 20+ goals including Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Honorable Mention All-Americans Lindsey Kelleher and Haley Wan.
The Tigers return five of its top seven scorers from last season's squad including Kelleher and Wan. Kelleher led the team with 41 assists and finished second in goals (48) and drawn ejections (25). Wan was one of just 15 players in program history to score at least 50 goals (58) on a team-high 94 shots. She was first in steals (40), tied for first in blocks (seven), second in assists (37) and sprint wins (16).
During her time away from Princeton, Johnson helped the U.S. Olympic team win its second consecutive gold medal at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. In six games, she allowed just 28 goals, made 51 saves and was named the tournament's top goalkeeper. Johnson was also the first ever African-American and non-Californian to make the U.S. national team.
While at Princeton, the Miami native has posted an 81-13 overall mark, turning away 1,062 of the 1,533 shots she has faced en route to a 0.693 save percentage. Putting together three of the highest single-season save totals in program history, the 2015 CWPA Player of the Year is already the Tigers' career leader.
Other returners include seniors Morgan Hallock, Hannah Lapkin, Sydney Saxe, juniors Chelsea Johnson, Sydney Cheong and sophomores Eliza Britt and Charlotte Valentine. Hallock set a career high with 43 goals in 2016 and led the team and drawn ejections (61) while Lapkin added 16 goals, 14 steals and 24 drawn ejections. Saxe registered nine tallies and 19 swipes.
Cheong dropped in 15 goals, 15 steals and 10 helpers in her sophomore season. Chelsea Johnson was All-CWPA Tournament second team, finishing last year with 21 goals, 23 steals and 18 drawn ejections. Britt had a 50-point season (25 goals, 25 assists) as a freshman while Valentine stole 15 passes in 24 games.
The freshman class features five players from California and one from Florida. All of which will be fighting for playing time. "We are very excited to be adding this talented group of freshmen," said head coach Luis Nicolao.
Princeton sits No. 11 in the latest CWPA Varsity Poll. The top 10 remain the same from the previous week in Stanford, USC, UCLA, Calif., Arizona State, Cal-Irvine, Michigan, Hawaii, UC-Santa Barbara and UC-San Diego.
The 2017 season gets underway at the Bruno Classic hosted by Brown this weekend (Feb. 4-5). the Super Bowl Weekend. Princeton will open with Iona (9:10 a.m.) and Villanova (8:50 p.m.) on Saturday (Feb. 4) and No. 21 Wagner (Feb. 5) (12:40 p.m.).
