Johnson Stops 11 Shots, Scores Goal In Princeton's 14-7 Win Over No. 21 Wagner
February 05, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Ashleigh Johnson did just about everything on Sunday, stopping 11 shots, stealing two passes, assisting on a goal….and of course, scoring her own goal as the Princeton Tigers defeated the No. 21 Wagner Seahawks, 14-7, on Sunday afternoon at the Bruno Classic, hosted by Brown University.
It's the first goal from a Princeton goalie dating back prior to 2005. The Tigers improve to 3-0 overall and registered their first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Three players scored hat tricks in the contest in juniors Haley Wan, Chelsea Johnson and senior Morgan Hallock. For Wan, it's her 15th career three-goal game while Hallock registered her 13th and Johnson her sixth.
Wan also added three assists as did sophomore Eliza Britt. Princeton had nine steals, drew six ejections, blocked two shots in the win.
Trailing 4-3 as the clock was expiring in the first quarter, Ashleigh Johnson whipped a shot past the Wagner goalie from outside half court with one second remaining.
The Tigers again found themselves trailing in the second frame (5-4), before two tallies from Wan sandwiched by a goal from Hallock suddenly put the No. 11 nationally ranked team ahead 7-5. Wagner did not go away as they rattled of two straight goals before Wan's third goal of the half put Princeton in front, 8-7, at halftime.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad pitched a shutout in the second half, rolling out six consecutive goals in the victory. Ashleigh Johnson stopped seven shots during that span as Princeton now has secured at least 13 goals in each of its first three contests. The Tigers will now travel to Bucknell for the Bison Invitational next week (Feb. 11-12). First of the match of the tournament will be vs. Claremont Mudd-Scripts next Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
