Princeton Heads To Bucknell; Tigers Maintain No. 11 Spot In CWPA Poll
February 08, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – As the Princeton Tigers prepare for the Bison Invitational this weekend, the new Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll has them as the No. 11 ranked team in the country.
Stanford remains as the top team in the Varsity Poll, followed by USC, UCLA, Calif., and Arizona State. Michigan is the top CWPA team in the poll at No. 7.
The Tigers travel to Bucknell this weekend for the Bison Invitational. Undefeated on the young season, Princeton will take on Claremont Mudd Scripps (3 p.m.) and St. Francis-Brooklyn (8 p.m.) on Saturday with a matchup vs. George Washington on Sunday (9:15 a.m.). Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad has never faced Claremont Mudd Scripps, but is a combined 49-0 vs. St. Francis-Brooklyn and George Washington.
Princeton had stellar start to the 2017 season as it dropped Iona (14-5) and Villanova (13-3) last Saturday. The win over Villanova gave Nicolao 800 combined victories. The coach, who started in 1998, has 420 wins with the women's team and 380 with the men. He has a winning percentage of .726 and has been to the NCAA Tournament seven times during his tenure at Princeton.
The next day, the Tigers took down No. 21 Wagner, 14-7 in a game which senior Ashleigh Johnson scored a goal.
Junior Chelsea Johnson led the Tigers with nine goals over the weekend, adding two hat tricks. 12 different players scored in the weekend including Natalie Grayson, Maddy Damato, Amy Castellano and Abbey Blake registering their first collegiate goals.
