Maryland Picks Up 6-2 Decision Over Princeton
March 18, 2017 | Baseball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A three-run seventh inning helped the Maryland Terrapins over the Princeton Tigers, 6-2, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Max West and Chris Davis had two hits each for the Tigers. James Proctor went 5 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits, allowing three earned runs.
Jesper Horsted led off the game with a walk and moved to third base on a ground out and fly out, but was left stranded. One inning later, West ripped a double to right field that scored Ramzi Haddad, putting the Tigers in front, 1-0. A two-out RBI knock from Maryland's AJ Lee tied the contest in the home half of the second.
It took Princeton one at-bat to respond. David Harding reached base on an error and then stole second. Harding then raced to third on a ground out and then scored on a single from Nick Hernandez. Maryland tied the game for a second time with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the stanza.
The Terps' Zach Jancarski opened up the fifth frame, lacing a double down the left line. Two batters later, the outfielder touched home on a single from Marty Costes giving Maryland its first lead, 3-2.
Princeton created a two-out chance in the seventh. Back-to-back singles from West and Davis put runners on the corners, but a ground out completed the inning. The Terrapins pushed together two more tallies on back-to-back RBI hits from Will Watson (single) and Madison Nickens (double). Another sacrifice fly made the score, 6-2.
Lee had a game-high three RBI while three players had multi-hit outings for Maryland. A.J. Bloom gave up one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, picking up the victory.
Princeton drops to 2-8 this season while Maryland improves to 11-6. The Tigers will look to avoid a series sweep tomorrow with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
