PRINCETON – The Princeton Tigers will travel on the road this weekend to take on the Maryland Terrapins in a three-game series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday.
The Year That Was:
- The Princeton Tigers rebounded from a 7-32 campaign in 2015 to win the 2016 Ivy League Championship.
- It was the Tigers' eighth Ivy League title and 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
- The Tigers had seven All-Ivy League players while their five All-Ivy first team selections were the program's most since 2000. Robert H.B. Baldwin '42 head coach Scott Bradley was named Ivy League Coach of the Year.
- Princeton was 45th in the country in double plays per game (0.93), 67th in WHIP (1.35), 68th in hits per allowed nine innings (8.61) and 77th in ERA (3.95).
- Bradley's unit returns 21 players from last year's conference title run including five All-Ivy players, Zack Belski, Jesper Horsted, Chad Powers, Nick Hernandez and Keelan Smithers.
- Powers was the first Tiger to win Ivy League Pitcher of the Year since Mike Ford in 2013 and the only unanimous selection for All-Ivy first team. He was tied for first in the conference in wins (six), second in innings pitched (69.2), second in ERA (2.45) and tied for second in shutouts (one).
- Hernandez finished in the top ten among Ivy League players in RBI (second), hits (seventh) and stolen bases (eighth).
- Belski was fourth in the Ivy League in RBI. He led the conference in put outs (386) and doubles played turned (38). The senior improved in every offensive category as he set season-highs in runs (19), hits (39), home runs (three), RBI (28), total bases (59), walks (19), on-base percentage (.346) and slugging percentage (.383). Belski set a program-record with eight RBI vs. Brown (Apr. 10), a single-game record that stood for 84 years.
- Horsted led the team in hitting (.326) and was ninth in the Ivy League. In the fall, the sophomore earned All-Ivy League honorable mention after catching 30 passes for 413 yards and a touchdown during Princeton football's Ivy League championship season
- Smithers was All-Ivy League second team and is a member of the Roaring 20 cappella group.
- Princeton's top returning reliever is Chris Giglio. The senior made 18 appearances and posted a 3.10 ERA.
- A staple of Princeton baseball, the Tigers will begin the 2017 season with 18 consecutive road games.
- After the four-game set vs. Duke and UNC Greensboro, the Tigers head to Maryland (Mar. 17-19) before two games at Old Dominion (Mar. 21-22).
- Princeton makes a trip to Annapolis, Md., to battle Navy (Mar. 24-26) and then makes a quick jaunt to Seton Hall on Mar. 29.
- Ivy League games begin on April Fools' Day (No joke!) vs. Yale at Clarke Field.
- The Tigers had six alum reach the Major Leagues last season in Danny Barnes (Toronto Blue Jays), Chris Young (Kansas City Royals), Matt Bowman '14 (St. Louis Cardinals), David Hale '11 (Colorado Rockies), Ross Ohlendorf '05 (Cincinnati Reds), and Will Venable (Los Angeles Dodgers).
- Barnes and Bowman made their Major-League debuts last season.
- It was the second straight year that the Tigers had an alum reach the American League Championship series as Barnes was a member of the Blue Jays.
- Princeton finished with 11 alumni playing professional baseball by the end of the 2016 season.
- Freshman Ramzi Haddad's home run in the ninth inning helped the Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Friday evening.
- Tied at 3-all, Haddad picked a perfect time for his first collegiate home run as he laced a ball over the right center field fence.
- Nick Hernandez had a career day as he helped the Princeton Tigers earn a split in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Spartans won game one, 6-1, while the Tigers earned a 10-5 decision in the nightcap.
- Hernandez had a career-high four hits along with three RBI to jump start the Tigers' offense in game two on Saturday. Chris Davis and Asher Lee-Tyson also amassed multi-hit games while Davis and Max West each scored three times. Ben Gross struck out six hitters in six innings of work to score his first career victory.
- The Princeton Tigers could not earn a series victory, dropping a 12-3 decision on Sunday afternoon.
