San Jose State defeated the Princeton softball team 4-1 and 9-4 to sweep a doubleheader in the Tigers' last games in California on the spring trip.
In the opener, Madison Aurin doubled home a Casey Watt single in the first as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead, and two singles to start the third set up back-to-back RBI groundouts from Aurin and Georgia Blair.Â
That put San Jose State up 3-1 after Allison Harvey singled home a leadoff hit-by-pitch to Alex Viscusi in the top half of the third. Harvey's single was one of two hits the Tigers had in the opener along with a Marissa Reynolds single in the second, and San Jose State pitcher Katelyn Linford retired 13 of the last 14 batters she faced around a seventh-inning walk to Reynolds.
San Jose State added its fourth run in the sixth when Cassidy Clark doubled home a Blair leadoff single. Claire Klausner took the loss for the Tigers.
In game two, Princeton got out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth, starting the inning with a Mikayla Blaska triple before Harvey singled her home for the game's first run. Kaitlyn Waslawski had a sacrifice fly later in the inning to plate Harvey.
But SJSU responded in a big way in the bottom half of the fourth, sending 10 to the plate while scoring five runs. Aurin, Blair, Clark and Kaelin Amrein drove in a run apiece before Alyssa Avila doubled home a pair to put the Spartans up 5-2.
SJSU added three more in the fifth, all on an Amrein home run, before the Tigers got two back in the sixth. Blaska led off the inning with a double before Reynolds singled her home, and Alex Colón drew a bases-loaded walk to score an earlier walk to Harvey. That brought Princeton within 8-4 before SJSU got one back in the bottom half of that inning when Katie Valladao doubled home a run.
Ashley LaGuardia took the loss for the Tigers while Collette Riggs had the win for the Spartans. Linford had the save, entering in the sixth after the bases-loaded walk to Colon.
Princeton will head back to the East Coast to play four games at Long Island University in Brooklyn between Saturday and Sunday, with two against the host Blackbirds and two against Binghamton.
