West and Pitching Staff Helps Princeton Collect Two Wins Over Navy
March 25, 2017 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Behind stellar pitching performances from James Proctor and Ben Gross, the Princeton Tigers registered two victories over the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen at Max Bishop Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers won 4-2 in game one and 5-2 in game two.
Princeton 4, Navy 2
Zack Belski opened up the second inning with a home run that tucked around the left-field foul pole. After a walk and single, a throwing error gave the Tigers their second run. Max West followed with a RBI single up the middle before another run touched home on a double play.
A two-out two-run single from Zach Biggers cut the Midshipmen's deficit in half in the bottom of the second.
Proctor retired the last seven batters he faced and allowed just one base runner to reach second base after the second inning. He scattered four hits in picking up his first collegiate victory.
Princeton 3, Navy 0
Five Tigers had multi-hit outings in Nick Hernandez, Belski, Conor Nolan, West and Cody Phillips. Gross went 6 1/3 innings, scattering six hits, allowing two earned runs. He struck out four hitters in picking up the victory.
Ramzi Haddad looked to have given Princeton a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but his long fly ball hit the very top of the wall, leading to a double. The Tigers couldn't get him home.
Belski and Conor Nolan singled to open up the fourth frame. Joseph Flynn put down a sacrifice bunt down the first base line, but the Navy pitcher threw the ball away, allowing Belski and Nolan to score. After a strikeout, Max West hit his first collegiate home run on a deep drive to left field.
Princeton added another run in its next at-bat. A fielding error and single puts runners on the corners before Belski lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.
After the third inning, Gross sent down nine straight Midshipmen before a walk with one out in the sixth inning. Three batters later, Evan Lowery got Navy within two (4-2) on a two-run single up the middle. Gross got a fly out to end the threat.
Ryan Smith finished the contest for Princeton, not allowing a hit over the last two frames. Smith went 2 2/3 innings, striking out three in nabbing his first career save. David Harding's pinch-hit RBI knock in the seventh stanza gave the Tigers an insurance tally.
Princeton and Navy finish their four-game set tomorrow. The 2016 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, Chad Powers, will be on the mound for the Tigers as they look for their first series victory of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
