Navy Rallies For Comeback Win Over Princeton
March 26, 2017 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS – The Navy Midshipmen rallied with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Princeton Tigers, 8-6, at Max Bishop Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Navy earned a split in the four-game series.
David Harding had three hits, two runs and a RBI while Nick Hernandez and Danny Baer also notched multi-hit outings. Chad Powers went seven innings, giving up eight hits, striking out three in the loss.
Powers wiggled his way around Navy's lineup as the home team had a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but didn't score.
Princeton's first scoring threat came in the fourth frame. With two outs and a runner on, a walk and infield single from Baer loaded the bases. On the first pitch, Asher Lee-Tyson ripped a line drive, but it was right at Navy's shortstop Travis Blue.
In the bottom of the frame, Jesper Horsted got turned around in left field, but made a circus catch to keep Navy off the base paths to open the inning. After a single, Horsted, again came through as he made a running grab on the warning track before slamming into the wall.
In the fifth, Max West and Harding began with singles. Following a sacrifice bunt from Horsted, Ramzi Haddad got West home on a groundout. The next hitter, Hernandez, had a RBI knock up the middle to give Princeton its second run.
The Tigers added more runs in the sixth stanza. With one out, back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for Harding. The freshman singled up the middle before Horsted lined a two-run double down the left field line. A sacrifice fly from Haddad make the score, 6-0.
After Princeton's four-run spot in the top half of the sixth inning, Navy responded with three of its own. Two singles put a runner in scoring position with two out. A dropped foul ball extended an at-bat for Adrian Chinnery, who later walked to load the bases. Matthew Wilcox then had a bases-clearing double that cut the home team's deficit in half, 6-3.
Navy rallied with five runs in the eighth inning. A throwing error and wild pitch gave the Midshipmen its fourth and fifth runs. Two hitters later, another wild pitch tied the contest at 6-all. A run-scoring triple from Logan Knowles put Navy in front while Blue's RBI single added an insurance tally.
Princeton falls to 4-13 on the season while Navy improved to 15-9 overall. The Tigers will have a weekday game at Seton Hall on Wednesday before Ivy League play starts at Clarke Field next Saturday vs. Yale (12 p.m.). First pitch for the Seton Hall game is set for 4 p.m.
