UCSB Defeats Men's Tennis Team as Spring Trip Comes to a Close
March 26, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Alex Day and Luke Gamble, the nation's 26th-ranked doubles pair, had a win over the ninth-ranked doubles team in the country, but UC Santa Barbara defeated the Princeton men's tennis team 6-1 in the Tigers' final match of the spring trip to California.
Day and Gamble had a 6-4 win over the Gauchos' Simon Freund and Morgan Mays to clinch the doubles point along with a win from Tom Colautti and Payton Holden on court two, but UCSB won the rest of the way, sweeping the singles matches.
"UCSB played well on its home courts today, and credit to them for playing strong after losing doubles as we had an edge in some first sets," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "However, I'm highly disappointed today and with our results this week. We simply are not doing a good job of closing out matches. We are plaguing ourselves with numerous missed opportunities on game points, set points and match points. We will look to refocus our efforts at home the next two weeks and prepare for Ivy League play."
Princeton will have next weekend away from competition before opening Ivy League play April 7 at Cornell.
Order of finish: Doubles: 2, 3, 1; Singles: 2, 3, 4, 6, 5, 1
