No. 24 Cornell Defeats Men's Tennis Team in Ivy Opener
April 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
No. 24 Cornell took Friday's Ivy-opening match from the Princeton men's tennis team 4-1 in Ithaca.
Cornell took the first two doubles matches to be decided, and despite Payton Holden evening the match with a straight-set win at sixth singles, Cornell took the next three singles matches to end to clinch the win.
"Despite the end result, we left it all on the court," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "I was pleased with our effort and energy, and it is the type of collective fight we need in every match. Five of the six singles went to three sets and we just didn't quite turn the corner. We made a big push and had a lot of momentum in the middle stages of singles. The doubles point was crucial and it was unfortunate we didn't play as well there as we did against Cornell in the ECAC. However, we gave ourselves a much better chance of winning this match in singles. They are very a balanced and strong top to bottom. We knew it would be a good challenge on their home courts, but I'm proud of how we represented our program today. We'll look forward to getting home for another battle with Columbia Sunday."
Sunday's match against No. 22 Columbia is set for a 1 p.m. start at the Lenz Tennis Center, or in Jadwin Gym in the event of inclement weather.
Order of finish: Doubles: 1, 3; Singles: 6, 1, 3, 2
