No. 7 Princeton Takes Down No. 10 Syracuse, 16-11
March 29, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
In the first meeting between the two teams in orange it was the No. 7 ranked Princeton Tigers that came out on top, defeating No. 10 Syracuse, 16-11. The Tigers had major contributions all over the field, including from their two Tewaaraton candidates, as Olivia Hompe net a career-high seven goals and Ellie DeGarmo made a career-high 18 saves. Other strong efforts came from defender Madeline Rodriguez who had six draw controls and attacker Colby Chanenchuk who dished out five assists.
Hompe added two assists to finish with a career-high nine points. She is the first Tiger to tally nine points in a game since 2013, and is just the eighth player to do so.
Though the Orange notched the first goal of the game, the Tigers rattled off the next five with Hompe scoring twice, while freshman Tess D'Orsi, freshman Laura Pansini and sophomore Kathryn Hallett had one each. Syracuse's Emily Hawryschuk interrupted the Princeton run at 17:29, but the Tigers got right back at it, scoring the game's next four goals to take its largest lead of the game, 9-2 at 11:41 of the first half.
Syracuse (8-4) used a a player advantage to start a run as it scored three straight man-up goals and tacked on one more during a four-goal run.
Hompe finished off the half with her fourth goal to make it a 10-6 Princeton (7-1) lead at the half.
The second half ticked back-and-forth with the teams trading goals for the first 13 minutes. Syracuse desperately tried to get back into the game as it had 17 shots in the second but DeGarmo had other ideas as she made 11 second-half saves to keep the Tigers on top.
Things got a little more comfortable for Princeton when it scored three goals in 1:50 with the tandem of Chanenchuk-Hompe teaming up for two while Pansini added an unassisted marker to make it 15-9 at 11:12.
Hawryschuk's unconventional free-position shot beat DeGarmo at 7:40 but she stopped the next two Syracuse shots, including another Hawryschuk free position before Camille Sullivan let a rocket go past Asa Goldstock at 4:51. Goldstock finished the game with six saves.
Rodriguez won the ensuing draw while teammate DeGarmo continued to play solid as she picked off a pass and stopped a Donahue shot with 1:32 left. A Princeton turnover led the final goal of the game, a tally by Nicole Levy with 11 seconds remaining.
Shots were even in the game at 33-33, with Syracuse having a slight advantage in draws 16-13.
