The Tigers enjoyed a doubleheader sweep in the Ivy opener against Brown Saturday.
Sweep of Brown for Softball Team in Ivy Opener
April 01, 2017 | Softball
Early scoring led to wins for the Princeton softball team in a Saturday doubleheader sweep of Brown, 4-3 and 10-0 in a run-rule shortened five innings at the Class of 1895 Field.
Princeton, Yale and Columbia all swept their Ivy-opening doubleheaders, and two of those teams will meet Sunday with Yale coming to Princeton after its Saturday sweep of Cornell in Ithaca. The 12:30 p.m. twinbill will be video streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network, and admission is free.
In the opener, while pitcher Claire Klausner retired the first nine Bears she faced, Princeton got out to a 4-0 lead. Three of those came in the first, with a pair of walks to Megan Donahey and Marissa Reynolds setting up Kaylee Grant for a two-run double before Kaitlyn Waslawski was the second of back-to-back hit batters that forced in a run. In the second, a Donahey base hit put her on for a run-scoring single by rookie classmate Allison Harvey.
Brown got back into it with three solo home runs, one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Kaitlin Okimoto had two of those and Annie McGregor had one, but Klausner allowed no more in sealing up the win. Katie Orona took the loss for the Bears.
In the nightcap, though Princeton got a pair of runs in the first, it was an eight-run fourth inning that broke it wide open before Erica Nori completed the shutout and the early ending. Like Klausner, Nori got off to a strong start, retiring the first eight Bears she faced before ultimately harmless back-to-back two-out singles in the third. Meanwhile, Donahey got on as the leadoff batter in the first and Reynolds homered for the 2-0 lead.Â
Three innings later, Princeton reached the first six batters of the fourth with a run-scoring double from Grant, a two-run double from Keeley Walsh and a three-run home run from Danielle Dockx pushing the lead to 8-0. Harvey and Reynolds had RBI doubles of their own later in the inning to push the lead to 10-0.
Nori ended up with a three-hit shutout, walking just one and striking out three in her five innings. Meghan Wimmer took the loss for Brown.
On the day, Reynolds went 4 for 5 with a walk, slugging 1.600 with the home run and a double. Four more Tigers hit .500 on a day when Princeton went a combined 15 for 42 (.357) and held Brown to just 8 of 44 (.182).
