LaGuardia, Tigers Top Monmouth, 5-1
April 11, 2017 | Softball
Junior Ashley LaGuardia picked up her first win of the season by giving up just a run on four hits Tuesday at Monmouth, helping the Tigers beat the Hawks 5-1.
The win is Princeton's 10th in its last 13 games and comes in the team's second-to-last day of non-conference games on the regular season. After a return to Ivy League play Saturday and Sunday at Penn, Princeton will host Lehigh next Wednesday. The Tigers are 6-2 in the Ivy, leading the Ivy South by a game at the close of cross-divisional play.
Monmouth broke through first, using a leadoff walk to Chloe Howerth and a Justene Reyes double to take a 1-0 lead after an inning. Princeton got even in its next at-bat, putting two on with back-to-back one-out singles from Haley Hineman and Alex Colón before a wild pitch scored Hineman's run with Joey Smith pinch running.Â
The Tigers left a run in scoring position in each of the next two frames before breaking through in the fifth. Four straight Tigers reached to start that inning with a Marissa Reynolds single following scoring a base hit from Kylee Pierce and Mikayla Blaska singling home a walk to Allison Harvey. A throwing error helped score Reynolds and move Blaska along for Alex Viscusi to pick her up on a groundout for a 5-1 lead.Â
No Monmouth runner got past second base against LaGuardia after the first inning and only three got that far after Monmouth scored its early run. LaGuardia set down the last seven Hawks she faced and 21 of the last 25.
Princeton will have a 4 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Penn and a 2 p.m. twinbill Sunday. All four games will be video streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network and Saturday's pair will also be available on ESPN3.
