Returning to '95 Field, Softball Team to Host Lehigh Wednesday
April 17, 2017 | Softball
Seventeen days after playing their most recent home game at the Class of 1895 Field, the Princeton softball team will return to their home field when they host Lehigh for a pair Wednesday at 3 p.m.
The road didn't treat the Tigers too badly. Princeton won seven of nine since closing that last homestand, including six of eight in Ivy League play to stand at 10-2 in the league and lead the Ivy South by three games over Columbia. The Lions will be in town over the weekend, but before that, the leaders in the Ivy and the Patriot Leagues will meet.
Lehigh (22-16, 11-1 Patriot) is on the doorstep of clinching the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament, holding a five-game lead over both Bucknell and Boston University with six to play. Four Mountain Hawks are hitting better than .300, led by junior Nicole Yozzo at .340, with the team hitting .280. Senior Christine Campbell (13-4, 1.83 ERA), sophomore Emily Sorem (8-7, 2.24) and rookie Parker Boyd (1-5, 5.74) have combined to throw all but six of the team's 257 innings. Campbell and Sorem started a game in each of Lehigh's two midweek doubleheaders since the team returned home from playing outside the Northeast, with Campbell beating both Saint Joseph's and Fordham and Sorem getting a win against the Hawks but taking a loss against the Rams.
The Tigers (18-13, 10-2 Ivy) rank fifth in the nation in fielding percentage at .980 and 21st in doubles per game at 1.55. Senior Claire Klausner is one of 17 pitchers in the nation who have thrown at least 70 innings and hit only one batter, while sophomore Riley Wilkinson is tied for fourth in the nation with her four saves. Senior Marissa Reynolds ranks 10th nationally with a .560 on-base percentage, 11th with a .849 slugging percentage, 13th with a .452 batting average and 24th with 0.34 doubles per game. Rookie Allison Harvey ranks 25th with one strikeout per 31.3 at-bats (three in 94 ABs).
Seniors Klausner (8-4, 3.92) and Erica Nori (7-1, 3.09) have started Princeton's 12 Ivy League games and junior Ashley LaGuardia (2-6, 8.14) turned in a strong performance to get the win in the Tigers' 5-1 win in the team's last non-league game at Monmouth on April 11. LaGuardia has earned the win in each of her last two appearances, including the Monmouth game and Sunday's finale at Penn in relief.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Lehigh 30-18. The Tigers won 20 of the first 21 games in the series through 1996. The series resumed in 2003 with mostly annual meetings, and though Princeton won seven of the first nine, Lehigh has won 15 of 18 since 2006 including an active seven-game winning streak. Princeton's last win came in a doubleheader split at '95 Field in 2011, and the Tigers' last doubleheader sweep of Lehigh came at '95 Field in 2005. Lehigh has swept four of the seven twinbills since with the other three finishing up as splits.
The Lehigh games will be Princeton's last non-league games of the regular season. The four-game series against Columbia will be Saturday and Sunday at '95 Field with 12:30 p.m. starts both days.Â
