Lehigh Sweeps Pair of Close Games from Softball Team
April 19, 2017 | Softball
Continuing their annual non-conference series, Lehigh came to the Class of 1895 Field Wednesday and swept a pair from the Princeton softball team, 3-1 and 7-6.
The losses drop Princeton to 18-15 overall, and the Tigers will take a three-game lead in the Ivy South into the weekend's series with Columbia. The series is due to be played Saturday and Sunday in 12:30 p.m. doubleheaders, but if weather forces changes, any new information will be posted here on GoPrincetonTigers.com.
In the opener, Lehigh scored twice in the first inning, using a Mary-Hannah Smith triple to bring home a leadoff single from Nicole Yozzo and following that with a Vicky Lattanzio double to score Smith. Lehigh pitcher Christine Campbell got out of a bases-loaded jam unscathed in the first, and after that, she yielded the Tigers little. After Lehigh added another in the fourth when a Carolyn Wright double picked up a leadoff Ashley Rabago single for a 3-0 lead, Princeton scored in the fifth when Kylee Pierce singled home a leadoff walk to Danielle Dockx to make it 3-1.
Campbell retired seven of the last eight Tigers she faced to seal the win while Claire Klausner took the loss for the Tigers.
In the nightcap, Lehigh scored four times in the first inning on three hits, three walks and a hit batter. Rabago had a two-run double while Brianna Gerhardt added a sacrifice fly and Rachel Timberman took a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.Â
Princeton got two runs back in teh second when a Kelsey Smith groundout picked up a leadoff double from Marissa Reynolds before rookie Joey Smith had her first career hit to single home Alex Viscusi, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Princeton then scored a run an inning right through the sixth to take the lead. After Lehigh went ahead 5-2 in the third when Yozzo drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home an Emily Preble single, Princeton got that run back when Megan Donahey, who reached on a throwing error, came home on a Reynolds single. Viscusi, who started the bottom of the fourth by reaching on an error, came home on a Kaitlyn Waslawski double to make the score 5-4 for Lehigh. Princeton pulled even in the fifth when back-to-back singles from Reynolds and Mikayla Blaska set the table for a Viscusi RBI groundout, and an inning later, Joey Smith's first career home run to lead off the sixth put Princeton up 6-5.
The lead, though, was short-lived. Lehigh started the seventh with singles from three of the first four batters. Gerhardt had the second of those to bring home Rabago, and Timberman had what became the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly. Princeton, facing Campbell again, went down in order in the seventh as Campbell picked up the save for Parker Boyd and Riley Wilkinson took the loss in relief for the Tigers.
