PHILADELPHIA (4/19/17) - No. 6 Princeton was dealt its first Ivy League loss of the season on Wednesday night, 17-12 defeat at No. 10 Penn.
The Quakers went on a seven-goal run in the first half and the seven-goal deficit was too much for the Tigers to overcome. Down 9-2, Princeton finished out the first half scoring three of the final four goals. Freshman Tess D'Orsi sparked the offense with her 31st goal of the season, with Kathryn Hallett assisting at 8:29. Freshman Annie Cory and senior Anna Doherty found the twine, as the Tigers went into the locker room trailing, 10-5.
Unforced turnovers and cautions came all too frequently in the game and wouldn't help the Tigers in the second half take the lead, though each team scored seven second-half goals.
Princeton got within four in the first three minutes of the second with sophomore Allie Rogers netting her ninth of the season, and D'Orsi doling out her second of the night, from Hompe as the score stood 11-7.
Penn answered with four straight goals but Princeton was quick to respond as it scored five of the next six goals, including three in 1:42. Ellie McNulty went end-to-end with a great solo effort before Doherty converted a free-position attempt. Elizabeth George's unassisted goal at 14:58 again made it a five-goal game, 15-10. Hompe ties the Princeton all-time record for free-position goals, along with Lauren Simone '02, with 31. Hompe's next goal was also special, as it marked her 50th goal of the season. Only five other players in Princeton history have been able to score 50 in a season, and Hompe is just the third in Tiger history to do it twice - as she scored 54 goals in 2016.
Alex Condon, who finished with eight goals for Penn, added the final goal, a man-up goal with 30 seconds left.
Britt Brown made 10 saves in net for Penn and allowed her team to take the lead as she denied Princeton on its first five shots on goal.
Senior Ellie DeGarmo stopped nine shots for the Tigers.
Princeton, now 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the Ivy League, looks to rebound on Saturday when they travel to No. 12 Cornell.
