Chanenchuk's 2OT Goal Lifts No. 6 Princeton to 12-11 Win at No. 12 Cornell
April 22, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
ITHACA, N.Y. (4/22/17) - Junior Colby Chanenchuk scored the biggest goal of her career as she was left open behind the goal after a Cornell double was put on leading scorer Olivia Hompe. Facing the double, Hompe fed Chanenchuk who came around the right side of the goal and buried the double overtime winner, 12-11.
The win keeps Princeton chances at winning the Ivy League title alive as Princeton, Penn and now Cornell sit with matching 5-1 Ivy League records.
Princeton took a 6-3 lead in the first half with Allie Rogers, Tess D'Orsi and Chanenchuk scoring once each, while Hompe collected a first-half hat trick.
Hallett increased the lead to 7-3 with her second of the game, scoring on a free-position attempt to start the second half
Cornell responded the next three straight goals and went on a 5-1 run to knot the game at 8-8 at 11:21.
Sophomore Elizabeth George had a solo effort to put Princeton back on top 9-8 but the Big Red answered back, scoring three goals in 2:22 to take their first two-goal lead of the game, 11-9 with just four minutes left in the half.
D'Orsi made is a one-goal game with her 34th tally of the season at 2:37, when she broke into the middle of the fan and shot around three defenders and goalie Renee Poullott.
Princeton was whistled for an early jump on the ensuing draw control giving the Big Red the ball. Cornell had two free-position attempts, the first by Catherine Ellis wide, the second by Kristy Gilbert stopped by Ellie DeGarmo who hung on to the ball as Princeton started to streak down the field with 53 seconds left. A turnover looked like it might all be over for the Tigers but sophomore defender Alex Argo came up with a huge caused turnover as she forced Ellis out of bounds with 13.7 seconds left. Argo dished off to Anna Doherty on the restart and Doherty launched a 40-yard pass to Hompe. Hompe made a run to the goal and scored with 2.9 seconds left to tie the game, 11-11 and force extra time.
Cornell won the draw on the first draw control of overtime, but Sarah Phillips was caused for an offensive charge giving Princeton the ball just 49 seconds later. The Tigers peppered the Cornell defense with shots, with a total of seven shots and four on frame. The teams changed ends and this time it was the Tigers that won the draw but they were called for a clock violation 90 seconds later after taking two wide shots, leaving the door open for Cornell. After a shot high, Taylor Reed restarted and came around the right side where she was denied by DeGarmo with 6.1 seconds left. DeGarmo finished the game with 14 saves.
George pulled down the next draw to open the second overtime but 23 seconds later the Tigers were forced into a turnover by Joey Coffey. DeGarmo came up with another big stop, this time on Gilbert at 3:59 as she cut towards the middle. George picked up the ground ball and the Tigers cleared. George took a shot attempt that went wide but Hompe backed up and had the ball on the restart when she was doubled, forcing her to dish the ball to Chanenchuk for the game winner.
Hompe had a seven-point game, scoring four goals and three assists while also causing three turnovers. She surpassed Lindsey Biles on the all-time goals chart as she now has 179. Chanenchuk had three goals and one assist, while D'Orsi scored twice. George had a goal and an assist, three draws and five ground balls.
Sarah Phillips, Catherine Ellis and Kristy Gilbert each had hat tricks for the Big Red. Amie Dickson had a goal and three assists, while Poullott made 15 saves.
Princeton outshot Cornell 39-37, had five more ground balls 20-15 and eight more draws, 17-9.
Next Saturday will be Senior Day at Class of 1952 Stadium as the Tigers face Columbia in the regular-season finale at 1 p.m. A win for Princeton would give the Tigers at least a share of the Ivy League title.
