Princeton Wins Fourth Straight Ivy League Title and 13th Overall
April 29, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
An 18-11 win by No. 6 Princeton over Columbia in the regular-season finale gave the Tigers their fourth consecutive Ivy League title and the 13th in program history.
Princeton (12-3) shares the title with Cornell, who also finished the season 6-1 in league play. A win by Penn tomorrow would also give the Quakers a share of the title, and would give Cornell hosting rights for the Ivy League Tournament - based on the tiebreaker of goal differential. If Penn were to lose, Princeton would host the tournament, based on head to head with Cornell.
Senior Olivia Hompe tied her career-high with a nine-point afternoon, scoring six goals and three assists. With 60 goals on the season, Hompe has the most goals scored in a single season by a Tiger in program history and has tied Crista Samaras for the most points in a season with 85. Senior Anna Doherty had a hat trick and senior Ellie DeGarmo made eight saves in her 12th win of the season.
The Class of 2017 is just the second class in Princeton history to win an Ivy League in each of its four years.
Scoring just 10 seconds into the game and taking a 5-0 lead thanks to a hat hat trick by Hompe in the first 6:09, it looked as though the Tigers would run away with this one.
The Lions however gave everything they had in their final game of the season and closed in on a 7-3 run to make it a one-goal game early in the second half. Columbia (7-8, 2-5 Ivy) scored three of its first four goals on free-position shots.
Princeton responded with five unanswered goals to give itself a 13-7 cushion at 17:33 of the second. Hompe and junior Elizabeth George each scored twice and Doherty net her first of the afternoon.
Columbia's Sarah Ruzzi and Victoria Kalamaras tallied back-to-back goals to end the Tigers' run before freshman Tess D'Orsi converted from the eight-meter and freshman Laura Pansini buried a Hompe pass two minutes apart.
Fallon Quinn and Caroline Joy scored two quick goals for the Lions to get within four, 15-11, at 6:15 but the Tigers would shut them down for the remainder of the game.
Pansini scored her second of the afternoon, while Doherty capped off the hat trick with two goals in the final 3:18.
Defensively, sophomore Nonie Andersen had four caused turnovers and two ground balls, while senior Madeline Rodriguez won five draws and picked up four ground balls. Senior Amanda Leavell added an assist as she won two draws, caused two turnovers and picked up three loose balls.
Princeton will wait to learn who it will play and and where, following Sunday's Penn/Yale match at 1 p.m.
Notes:
Tess D'Orsi now ranked 3rd in Princeton history in freshman goals (35) tying Lindsey Biles and in 3rd in points (46) tying Olivia Hompe
Colby Chanencuk ranks 2nd in assists in single-season with 32; 3 more would tie for the record of 35 held by Jenny Bristow
Olivia Hompe has 260 career points, 10 away from tying the all-time record of 270, held by Crista Samaras; needs 6 goals to tie the record of goals in a career of 189 held by Samaras
