Men's Tennis Team Falls to Harvard, 4-3
April 22, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Taking the last match left on court, Harvard defeated the Princeton men's tennis team 4-3 Saturday afternoon in Jadwin Gym.
The win keeps Harvard on pace with Columbia and Cornell at the top of the Ivy League standings at 5-1 heading into Sunday's regular-season finales for those teams. Princeton will host Dartmouth Sunday at 1 and will host Penn next Saturday to close the regular season.
"Our seniors in the lineup today [Tom Colautti, Alex Day and Jonathan Carcione] really played fantastic tennis in a tough battle," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "As I said earlier in the year when we were able to beat Harvard at the ECAC [Championship], it's always a fierce, high-level match with these two teams. We have a great rivalry and both teams have a lot of respect for each other. We expected a close match and knew we would have to execute to win. As it normally is, doubles loomed large and we had our chances there. Jimmy [Wasserman] and Payton [Holden] played very well in getting a good win. I'm proud of the fight and energy the guys brought today, but there are no moral victories. We'll need the same type of energy and effort against Dartmouth tomorrow as we expect the same type of battle."
Harvard took the doubles point and Princeton answered with a win at sixth from Jonathan Carcione. The score stood at 2-2 after a Harvard win at third and Tom Colautti's three-set win at first, and the teams were tied again after Alex Day answered a Harvard win at fifth with a win over 121st-ranked Kenny Tao at second. That left the match up to court four, where Luke Gamble had won the second set from Harvard's Brian Yeung after a first-set loss. Yeung, though, took the decisive third set 6-3 to seal the win for the Crimson.
Princeton's match Sunday against Dartmouth is set for the Lenz Tennis Center. Admission is free, and the team will have updates on its Twitter account @PtonMensTennis.
Order of finish: Doubles: 2, 1, 3; Singles: 6, 3, 1, 5, 2, 4
