Columbia Records Weekend Sweep
April 23, 2017 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Columbia Lions took home a series sweep over the Princeton Tigers on Sunday afternoon, winning 15-2 in game one and 21-5 in game two, at Clarke Field.
Columbia 15, Princeton 2
The road team scored seven times in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by Shane Adams' two-run home run. Princeton scored its two tallies before the rain came on Saturday on a home run from Zack Belski and RBI double from Danny Baer. The game was suspended in the top of fifth inning and resumed today.
The day wait did not stop the Lions' offense as they recorded two more tallies in the fifth and five more in the sixth during today's action. Kyle Bartelman and Adams paced Columbia's offense with three hits each. Bartelman had four RBI and three runs scored. Ty Wiest earned the victory while Ethan Abrams finished off the last three frames to snag the save.
Princeton's Kevin Thomsen made his first appearance since Apr. 8, 2015, throwing a relief inning in the contest.
Columbia 21, Princeton 5
Ramzi Haddad and Belski posted two hits each to lead Princeton while Asher Lee-Tyson scored twice.
Haddad got the Tigers on the board in the first frame on a RBI knock that scored David Harding. Two batters later, Belski lined a base hit that let Haddad and Lee-Tyson circle the bases.
The Lions roared back, tying the game with three runs in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Randell Kanemaru's run-scoring single cut the Lions' deficit to two (3-1). Two hitters later, Chandler Bengtson's two-out two-run single tied the game at 3-all.
The flood gates opened for the Lions as they amassed five more runs in the fourth. After two runs already crossed the plate, Bengtson, again, provided the big hit as his two-out triple cleared the bases, making the score 8-2.
Columbia scored in every inning after the fourth stanza, finishing with 21 runs and 22 hits. Six different Lions had multi-hit games. Bengtson collected seven RBI while Ben Porter and Kanemaru drove in four each.
Princeton drops to 9-26-1 and 5-11 in the Ivy League while Columbia now sits at 14-21 overall and 9-7 in conference. The Tigers make a road trip to No. 22 St. John's on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
