Women's Golf Team Nears Ivy Record in Winning Ivy League Title by 31 Strokes
April 23, 2017 | Women's Golf
Video Interview with Erika DeSanty and Amber Wang
It had been a 12-year wait for the Princeton women's golf team since its last Ivy League title in 2005, a wait that included 10 top-four finishes in the 11 Ivy League Championship tournaments in between including four top-two finishes and one by a single stroke in 2013.
The wait is over, and the Tigers left no doubt about it, finishing 31 strokes in front of second-place Harvard to near the record for the largest margin of victory in the 21 all-time Ivy League Championship tournaments. Yale finished 38 strokes ahead of Princeton to win the inaugural tournament in 1997 and Princeton was 35 strokes better than Yale in 2005.
Two days after posting a 296, its best round at the Ivy League Championship since a final-round 288 in 2011, Princeton turned in a final-round 293 Sunday at the Orange Tree Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., to finish with a three-round score of 891, the second-lowest in the 15 Ivy League Championship tournaments that have gone three rounds. Harvard, which carded 890 in 2008, was the only other team to break 900 in those years. The title is Princeton's fifth, joining those won in 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2005.
Princeton broke a program record for a three-round tournament, surpassing the 894 the team reached at last season's Yale Women's Intercollegiate and matched at this year's Harvard Invitational.
The team title wasn't the extent of Princeton's wins at the first Ivy League Championship tournament to be held outside the Ivy footprint. Sophomore Amber Wang led four Tigers in the top seven to win medalist honors at +2, carding a 1-under 71 Sunday to finish three strokes in front of rookie teammate Alison Chang. Wang is the first Tiger to win the individual title since Kelly Shon '14 in 2013.
Senior Hana Ku tied for third with with Dartmouth's Catharine Roddy at +7 and freshman Maya Walton finished seventh at +13.
With the win, Princeton gains the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, which will be held May 8-10 at four locations, including the home courses of New Mexico, Georgia, Texas Tech and Ohio State. The selections will be broadcast on the Golf Channel this Thursday, April 27, at 11 a.m. ET.
Eighteen teams and six individuals will compete at each of the four regional sites with the top six teams and the top three players not on those teams advancing to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., west of Chicago.
