Senior Matthew Benstead hasn't enjoyed Princeton's recent two-race drought, but he can look to a favorite team of his own for proof that things do improve.
"The last two weeks have undoubtedly been tough for the team," Benstead said. "However, much like Newcastle Football Club have gotten themselves back into the Premier League, our team is determined to get back on the podium in the upcoming postseason. We are working hard to gain speed and have already showed signs of improvement in the last few days. Our hunger for the Rowe Cup must continue to be the force that drives our team, and we will relish the opportunity to fight for the cup at the Eastern Sprints in three weeks time."
Before the fifth-ranked Tigers can fully turn their attention on Lake Quinsigamond, though, they will take on yet another Top-15 opponent this Saturday morning when they take on No. 12 Brown for the Content Cup. This has been the most closely contested rivalry for the heavyweights; Brown holds an all-time series lead of 12-11, but Princeton has won each of the last three. The regatta, as well as the open women's regatta to follow, will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Benstead and his teammates will try to become the first Tiger senior class to win all four Brown races, and they'll try to do so on Senior Day and their final race on Lake Carnegie.
"This weekend marks a very important race for all the seniors," he said. "It has been an unforgettable four years of racing on Carnegie, and I hope to ensure that it ends on a good note. It will be important not to let these emotions get in the way of executing our race plan and continuing to progress as a crew. Although it is an end to racing on Carnegie, this weekend is just a stepping stone to what will be a successful postseason."
Benstead knows his teammates have the right focus these days.
"Simply put, we need to find more speed," he said. "There are three key elements to this: technical changes, the team mentality, and physical improvements. Each boat has their own specific focuses, but these are the core values that will lead to an increase in speed in the postseason. There is no need to panic - we are a team that will always trust the process and look to the future."
